Thundra was formed as a project between Harald (then a member of Enslaved), Stein (then a member of Einherjer) and Nils (synth), which they had played with in other bands before. This is to be able to make the other type of music they liked, and to have full control with the music. The music was a cross of different types of metal with a touch of progressive sound. For the members all good metal is good music.
Because the material they made turned out so good, and the response to their four track recordings was well received, they decided to work on this full time. In the beginning the threesome did all vocals and instruments themselves.
When Harald and Stein left their former band, Thundra recruited Rune (on guitar) and Steven (on vocals), which played in another local band. This to fully make the music "picture" more complete.
And now as a full band they found their place... After some demos done in the rehearsal studio and good reviews on the few live jobs they did, they send out a few CD's to check the market. The response was good and after carefully considering the offers for a while, they decided to sign for Spinefarm. While recording their debut album "Blood Of Your Soul" they got Tor Erik Helgesen doing some guest vocals. After the recording Tor Erik became a member as a second vocalist and a rhythm guitarist. In late 2000 or early 2001 Stein, Harald and Tor Erik started a side project called "Dwelling Souls" to play vampiric black metal.
In September 2004 they signed a new deal with the Dutch label New Aeon Media, subsidiary to Karmageddon Media. In December 2005 they signed with the Greek label Black Lotus Records.
