1995 - 1 202 years after Lindisfarne
------------------------------------
Since 1994, Jocke Kristensson, Patrik Lindgren & Thomas Väänänen had been active in a metal band which at that time went through changes all the time, different band-names, members and musical styles. Finally a steady line-up came through, including Thomas (drums), Patrik (bass) and Jocke handling all guitars and vocals. The name of the band became Pantheon. The idea of starting up another project came up. Jocke used to play drums and Patrik guitar after the rehearsals, or just in the spare-time. Completed by Kimmy Sjölund (bass) and Peter Löf (synth), a new band was formed. After some different names, the choice fell upon Thyrfing.
Some months later, four songs had been completed, and the first recording took place under very primitive conditions. A four-track portable recorder in the rehearsal place with very bad microphones, amps etc. Jocke did all vocals on this recording (most of them during serious hangovers!). The demo was entitled "Solen svartnar" ("The Sun Turns Black"), and the lyrics dealt with the concept of Ragnarök, according to norse mythology, the end of the world, gods and humans. This recording was not made for any serious purpose. It was only pressed in 100 copies, and sent to some Swedish fanzines and sold through underground distributors.
1996 - Pagan land
-----------------
Eventhough Pantheon was still running, Thyrfing became more and more a "real band", and the need for a vocalist ended up in Thomas from Pantheon. It was time for another recording and this time a decent studio was used. The recording ended up in a second demo-tape entitled "Hednaland" ("Pagan Land"), consisting of four "real" songs and three instrumental. This time it was spread more widely; to labels, magazines and distributors all over the world.
1997 - In the sign of the Hammer
--------------------------------
In the beginning of the year, Thyrfing was contacted by dutch label Hammerheart Records. They were interested in the "Hednaland"-cassette and wanted to release it as a MCD. Without being too exhalted about that material anymore, the band came up with the idea of recording a fullength CD instead. Both parts liked the idea, and this ended up in a record-deal. The demo-release was postponed for a while.
The first half-year was spent on rehearsing and writing material, and also a couple of smaller, local gigs were made in Stockholm. In July, Thyrfing entered Sunlight Studio for the recording of the debut album. Engineerers were Tomas Skogsberg and Fred Estby of Dismember. After the recording a second guitarist was hired, mainly for live-performances, but also to add another dimension to the compositions. The job was given to Vintras, who was a former member of Funeral Mist.
1998 - A journey to the Abyss
-----------------------------
In March, the selftitled debut was released. The criticisms were mainly positive, and the biggest part of the media seemed to agree about the fact that Thyrfing was a band with big potential for the future. The writing and rehearsal for the second strike was already up and running. During the same time, doubts came up about Vintras being a suitable axe-man. He lacked the required interest and dedication for the band, so he had to leave the ship.
The second album, "Valdr Galga" was recorded in the quite well-known Abyss Studio (Studio B, to be precise), with Tommy Tägtgren behind the knobs. The recording session turned out to be very satisfying in the calm surroundings of countryside of Ludvika, in contrast to the more stressy recording at Sunlight. Thyrfing were ready to conquer on stage again, and Henrik Svegsjö (maestro of Ancient Winds, nowadays simply Winds) joined the band on guitars.
1999 - The first european raids
-------------------------------
In March, exactly one year after the debut, "Valdr Galga" was released. This time Hammerheart put a lot more effort into the promotion, and the album became a small "break-through" for the band. During the spring, Thyrfing figured in leading publications such as Rock Hard, Metal Hammer, Ablaze, Aardschok and Heavy Oder Was?. Thyrfing had previously been in contact with the newstarted swedish label Grim Rune Prod. which was interested in using the first demo-tape for a re-release. So, in May, "Solen svartnar" was pressed as an exclusive 7" EP, limited to 300 handnumbered copies.
Now it was time for the first gig abroad, and what to start with but the grandest of them all? Thyrfing played at Dynamo Open Air at the "Black Stage" at May 23rd.
Thyrfing was ready for their first tour. The tour was named Summer Clash II, and the other participating bands were Six Feet Under, Vader, Enslaved, Cryptopsy and Nile. A CD with both demo-recordings was released on Hammerheart's sublabel Unveiling The Wicked, just before the tour. The CD was named "Hednaland" after the second demo, and it was released in a limited edition of 2 000 copies. After the tour, the band took a well-deserved break for a while, gathering energy for the next album.
2000 - The new millenium...
---------------------------
...with it's hysteria was nothing that could stop Thyrfing from putting their third effort on tape. "Urkraft" was recorded in Abyss Studio B, once again. With a very strong album, waiting to be released, the band played seven shows in Germany, Netherlands and Belgium together with label-mates Primordial and Shadowbreed.
Who might know what the future holds? Let's first concentrate on the 21st of August and await the supreme arrival of "Urkraft"...
In March 2005 the band signed a new deal with Swedish label Regain Records.
