Trail of Tears started out in 1994 under the name of Natt, playing covertunes of various metal bands. Shortly after they started creating their own material which back then was very basic thrash/death metal. Not much happened until February 1996 when the band entered the studio and recorded a 5 track demo tape, simply entitled Natt.
The demo was not at all promoted but still sold out shortly after. In the following year, some line-up changes occured in the band. Female singer Ales Vik was replaced by Helena Iren Michaelsen, and drummer Vidar Uleberg by Jonathan Perez. The band decided to add a permanent keyboard player to the ranks as well and the choice fell on Frank Roald Hagen, the twin bother of Kjell Rune, the band's bassplayer. As a result of the new blood the music changed rather drastically and the bandname was changed into Trail of Tears.
With this line-up the band recorded a professional 3 track demo tape entitled When Silence Cries... in the Jailhouse Studio, March/April 1997. Not long after the recording, lead guitarist Michael Krumins left the band of his own free will and was replaced by Runar Hansen.
The band now put all their effort into promoting the demo, which led to 7 direct contract proposals from various labels. Early 1998 the band signed a deal for two albums with Dutch label DSFA Records and entered the Jailhouse Studio to record their debut album, Disclosure in Red, released in November '98 and mixed in Studio RS29 by producer Oscar Holleman. After the release the band undertook some heavy touring activities, first a Dutch/Belgian headliner tour with Dutch industrial gothsters Gail of God as support. Then a full European tour with Tristania, The Sins of Thy Beloved, Siebenburgen and Antichrisis, ending with a very successful show at the Dynamo Open Air Festival in Eindhoven, Holland.
A few months of rest and some occasional songwriting followed before the band again hit the road in November '99 on a Dutch/Belgian headliner tour with Dutch black/death metallers Callenish Circle as support. The tour turned out to be a disappointment to the band because of serious problems with female singer Helena I. Michaelsen, and it became evident that she had to go.
So the band entered the Jailhouse Studio again on January 18th to start the recording of their 2nd album entitled Profoundemonium. During the recording process again, some unmentionable things happened with Helena, and she was kicked out immediately after the recording of the female vocals. The band then started searching for a new singer which of course wasn't easy. During the search the band also found the time to mix the new album in RS29 in Holland, once again with the superb Oscar Holleman in charge. In May 2000 the band held a massive audition for potential singers, and the band now is proud to announce Cathrine Paulsen as new member.
