Tunnelvision was founded in 1995. The band's idea was to
create a progressive metal band still honouring old school prog-bands like
Yes, Genesis, UK, Rush and heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden, Dio etc.
The idea was also to do it with up-to-date grinding metal sounds. Some
problems were ahead from time to time, like some line-up changes which
held the main goals from not happening.
Nevertheless, in early '99 it was time for the debut album "While The
World Awaits" which got the attention of prog-fans and metalheads all
around Europe. Five guys with extraordinary playing skills are not easy
to find these days in any band, but here they are! Each and every one
making their best with their instruments and songs that are not destroyed
by "prog-all-the-time-for-the-sake-of-it" approach.
In the second album "Tomorrow" the band has taken the songwriting much
more deeper and heavier than before. Definitely darker album than WTWA,
it still contains lots of mindbending playing. You will be hearing
massive drums with lots of kick and odd time signatures, Metal guitar riffs
with grinding punch, fast guitar solos with accuracy and taste, tons of
futuristic keyboards and also vintage sounds combined with very great
solos, bad-ass basswork with catchy grooves and slap playing and of
course vocals that could be compared to the greats like Dickinson, Ozzy and
James LaBrie.
Long time keyboard wizard Kari Tornack stepped aside just before the
making of the second album leaving the job to the young Vili Ollila. Now
there have been no other line-up changes. "Tomorrow" was recorded at
Sonic Pump Studio in Helsinki, engineered by Tero (Max) Kostermaa and
Tunnelvision. After the recordings were done it was time for mixing which
led the band to another city (Tampere) in Finland and into the magic
hands of Mr. Samu Oittinen at Phantom Studio. The whole producing was
made by Tunnelvision and Kostermaa. Tomorrow was mastered at Finnvox by
the great Mika Jussila.
The band itself contains five very professional musicians and has been
claimed to be "one of the toughest live bands in finland". Mirka
Rantanen on the drums, Juhani Malmberg on the guitar, Marko Waara on vocals,
Vili Ollila on keyboards and Lauri Porra on bassguitar will give you a
blast that would make Houdini think twice!
It's definitely not wrong to say that Tunnelvision is the most
succesful progressive metal band in Finland. Very catching songs with elements
from pop to metal and beyond.
