Turisas was founded by Mathias D.G. Nygård and Jussi Wickström on a light summer night of 1997. During the summer there had been several projects just for fun, but Mathias and Jussi wanted to do something serious, start a real band !
In 1997 Turisas existed only in theory. Practically the rehearsals were held home at Mathias using an old shitty keyboard, a cheap Stratocaster-clone (a REAL Piece of Shit!) and a 70's tube bass amp.
In November Tuomas Lehtonen and Ari Kärkkäinen joined the band. The first rehearsals took place at Ari's summer cottage 30 km from their hometown, Hämeenlinna. The guys got drunk, spent hours in the sauna and played covers of bands like Iron Maiden, Mötörhead, Sepultura, Beatles etc. as good as they could...and of course, NAKED.
In 1998 Antti Ventola joined the band on keyboards and in May Turisas' quest for a rehearsalroom ended. Sami Aarnio joined Turisas on bass and the rest of the year 1998 was spent training.
Turisas played it's first gig in early 1999. In summer Sami left the band and later another local band, Cadacross, shared the rehearsalroom with Turisas. In late 1999 Turisas was in a sort of a standstill and Ari found his intrests elsewhere. He walked out. Shortly the headmaster of Cadacross, Georg Laakso took the oath.
In early 2000 Tino Ahola stepped on board the ship of Turisas. In May, Turisas played their second gig. The demo "The Heart of Turisas" was recorded at Bayside Studios during July, 2000. At first, it was ment for only promotional purposes, in other words, not for sale, but after six months of e-mails begging for a copy of the promo, Turisas decided to release it as a digipack edition. As usual, things did not go as smoothly as planned. Turisas suffered major technical problems with the cover graphics; harddrives broke down and everything was lost.
In 2001 Turisas shocked their audience in Nosturi, Helsinki with their massive live-appearance and took part in a Finnish band competition called Ääni & Vimma. The band succeeded pretty well; they made it to the top ten out of 130 bands ranging from pop to grunge. In July, Tino Ahola left the band due to lack of interest.
At the moment Turisas is working on the material for their debut album. Also a few gigs have been planned for early 2002.
