In 1989 the New York based thrashcore band Carnivore disbanded after having released two albums. The following year Peter Steele's longtime friend Sal Abruscato asks him if he wants to start a band and the answer was yes. Joining the two friends were Josh Silver on keyboards and Kenny Hickey on guitars. At first they called themselves Nu-Minority but soon changed to the more serious name Repulsion. After having recorded a demo tape for Roadrunner Records they found out that the name Repulsion was already in use by a European name. They decided to rename themselves Subzero but after about ten minutes they found out that that name was taken as well and now they became Type O Negative.
In 1991 the four recorded the debut album of the band at Systems Two studios during six weeks. The band encountered resistance from different organizations who accused the band of being a nazi and a scumbag (is that illegal or something?) even though Josh Silver was actually a jew. In November the band went out on tour with Biohazard and The Exploited.
In 1992 the band faked a live album by playing their material poorly under one microphone in the studio while overdubbing crowd noise from the neighbourhood. The album was called "Origin Of The Feces". The following year their second studio album was recorded. At this time the band suffered from some inner problems since Steel wasn't sure if he wanted to continue with the band. Sal left and joined the hardcore band Life Of Agony instead.
In the summer of 1993 the band went out on another tour where Johnny Kelly handled the drums. In 1995 Steele decided to appear in Playgirl magazine. 1996 followed with a new album and extensive touring. In 1999 the movie "The Blair Witch Project" was released with a soundtrack featuring the Type O Negative track "Haunted". The band has also appeared on several other movie soundtracks.
In 2000 the band went out touring again with label mates Coald Chamber, Full Devil Jacket and The Deadlights. In that summer their album "October Rust" also reaches gold status.
