URSKUMUG (ex-RAVEN) arose in 2001, when the initial
duo of Krauklis (guitar/voice) and Slayorda (keys) was joined by Maero
(guitar). Ever since the sound of the band has evolved towards rapid and
atmospheric black metal with an intention to avoid live drums, relying
on the mechanical soul of a drummachine and the bass timbres of a
synthesizer.
During its first years of pre-conceived existence URSKUMUG tried out a
number of other musicians on drums and bass (mostly dukes with weird
names like Midgard, Tomas, Berserker, Karlis, etc.), but unfortunately
none of them met the conditions vital to remain with the band.
In 2002 we changed our name to URSKUMUG, which is the primordial
mythago - a bear/boar-like half-animal, half-human creature in a cycle of
tribal fantasy fiction novels called Mythago Wood, written by the British
zoologist Robert Holdstock.
The other half of 2002 saw the first live appearances of URSKUMUG, as
well as the primal rehearsal/demo recordings. In October the band
occupied a professional studio to contribute to a Latvian metal compilation
CD, released by Gothic Productions. (This was an old version of our
song, then called When Water Becomes Ice.)
In August 2003, URSKUMUG entered the infamous Fēniks studio to record
its first serious full-length recording, which was self-released as
Pāreja („Passage”) Demo-CD in Autumn.
2003 was also the year when URSKUMUG first went abroad – in June they
took part in the annual pagan metal festival Kilkim Žaibu in Joniškis,
and have since then upheld healthy live activties, playing all over the
Baltics (Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus) and also festival in Czech Rep,
along its way sharing the stage with such bands as Skyforger, Loits,
Moonsorrow, Impaled Nazarene, Obtest, Zpoan Vtenz, etc.
The next 2 years go by playing shows, working on songs and looking out
for the missing link in the chain. The long search is rewarded in the
beginning of 2005, when URSKUMUG finally finds a permanent bassist –
Kriwix (ex-Moonveil). In Autumn the band appears at Obtest’s
release-launch in Vilnius, and is immediately afterwards abandoned by its long-term
member Slayorda, whose place behind the keys is now filled by Morgr,
ex-member of the Latvian dragon metal legends Heresiarh.
Another blink of an eye later URSKUMUG accepts a deal from the truest
Lithuanian metal label Ledo Takas Records for the rights to its next
album, which is about to be recorded during the last two moons of this
year. The CD/LP is scheduled for a Winter 2006 release and its concept
will dwell on the themes of Shamanism, Time and Death.
