Band biography

Voivod was originally formed in Canada in 1982 and with their debut album in 1984 they became one of the very first thrash metal bands. Since then the band has developed further to appear as a more laid-back progressive rock band. They have more or less broken up a couple of times but are now back again with a new line-up, featuring ex-Metallica Jason Newsted as a studio musician. In late July 2005 the band signed a new contract with The End Records. VOIVOD guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour passed away on Friday night, August 26th, 2005, at approximately 11:45 p.m. due to complications from advanced colon cancer — so advanced that the disease had spread to his liver. D'Amour slipped into a coma Thursday night and died less than 24 hours later in the palliative care unit of a Montreal hospital, surrounded by family and friends. He was 45 years old.
