The American hard rock act Warrant was formed in Los Angeles, California, in July 1984. After having spent some time on the club scene and establishing a solid line-up the band recorded a demo tape in September 1987 for Prince's own record label Paisley Park Records. In October that year they also signed a management deal with Tom Hulet and Associates. In January 1988 Warrant signed a contract with Columbia Records through their A&R representative Ron Oberman. In April they began recording their debut album. In June they embarked on their first national tour with D'Molls, followed by another one with Britny Fox in July.
"Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" was released in February 1989 and went gold by July that year. During the summer the band toured with Paul Stanley, Queensrÿche, Cinderella, Poison, Kingdom Come et al. The album went platinum, the single "Heaven" went gold and their live video went platinum. In December 1989 Warrant joined the Mötley Crüe "Dr. Feelgood" tour. Their second album "Cherry Pied" was released in March 1990 and went gold, followed by a tour together with Poison, a tour that ended in January 1991 after a fight between the two bands over stage room.
1993 was a dramatic year for the band as vocalist Jani Lane temporarily left Warrant in February. In March Columbia dropped the band as the grunge wave had arrived and in June their long-time manager Tom Hulet died. Obi Steiman became the band's new manager. A new record deal was signed with Tom Lipsky of CMC Records in September 1994. A Japanese deal was signed with Pony Canyon Records at the same time. In early December 2005 the band signed a new contract with MTM Music.
