Gustaf Hagel and Magnus Wohlfart met on the Internet in early 2001. A few months later Yggdrasil was formed. The purpose of Yggdrasil was to combine the calm and melodic features of old Scandinavian folk music with heavy metal.
The duo started writing songs and lyrics, and were slowly getting ready to record their first demo. But the recording was delayed because of some minor mishaps, and instead Jeremy Child joined the band. This meant that "real" drums would be used instead of a drum machine. Jeremy quickly learnt the songs and Yggdrasil was ready to enter Rock Helga Studios in Staffanstorp, Sweden on the 9th of December. After two weeks of hard work and intense recording 'Kvällning' was recorded. It features 3 melodic folk metal tracks with a lot of acoustic guitar parts and even some mouth harp on 'Nordmark'. 'Kvällning' also includes the acoustic intro 'Völvaspá' and 'Älvadansen', which is considered more of an outro than anything else. In total this makes a 5-track demo cd with just over 20 minutes worth of playing time.
The band kept on rehearsing a few new songs during the spring 2002 waiting for some studio time to re-mix the Kvällning' demo and at the first day of May the demo was completed and ready to be distributed. The reactions varied, but most of them were good.
In late summer 2002 an opportunity to appear on a compilation CD came up. The song 'Gryningstid' was edited and then recorded in September but it took until the end of December before the compilation, named 'Metal-Rules Vol. 1', was released and by then the band had already recorded their second demo, 'I Nordens Rike', and had just sent it to a printery. The second demo constisted of 6 songs including the instrumental 'Midnatt' and a full version of the track 'Gryningstid'; a total of 35 minutes of music and besides the folkish influences from the previous demo the band also used flute, piano and additional female vocals.
The demo was reviewed at http://www.metal-rules.com, http://www.metal-observer.com and http://www.metal-archives.com to mention a few and the response was great. Still no record company made contact and the band had other projects to focus on so Yggdrasil was put down for a while with an occasional rehearsal but not much more.
A year passed and in the summer of 2004 the band started rehearsing again with the aim placed at recording a third demo but instead, the band decided to re-record the old songs. Arrangements were made and after an autumn of rehearsal Yggdrasil entered the studio in January 2005 to record 'Kvällningsvindar över Nordrönt Land'.
