In a country like Iran it's maybe not too easy to get into the metalscene even as a listener?! How did you get your first metal records and which ones were those?
In the old days people who came to Iran would bring tapes and Cds as much as they could. And so slowly everybody would find a copy of it maybe! But it's been years that the internet is the major source. You can download almost anything you'd like. I think Sabbath's early stuff were the first metal records I've heard.
When and why did you decide to become a musician yourself?
It's been almost 8 years that I thought I'd be a musician, and I don’t really know why. After some time I thought this is what I want and I could not do anything else!
How did the band members get to know each other?
Ashkan (vocals) is an old friend. He’s been around for almost 15 years now. I met Alireza (lead guitars) via some friends and it’s been a year now that he's joined Ahoora and it’s been a great ride already. And Mohamad was the bass player in our ex-drummer's side project.
What "normal" jobs do you have?
Out of college, studying and unemployed!
Ahoora was the first band to play an official metal performance with lyrics in Iran ever. How did you feel about this?
Actually it wasn't meant to be like that. Also we were booked to play also the night after. But it was devastated. By the way, we didn't think that Ahoora or the other bands would have no chance in the future at all.
I guess you had many obligations for this gig?! Please tell us about them!
Yeah. The people shouldn't headbang or even stand! They even told us that the gig was cancelled. They thought it was dangerous to perform a metal gig one week before the presidency election. But we were lucky enough to bring it back to life 72 hours before the performance.
But by now you are a completely banned act. Why did the authorities decide on this?
They do not let us release or perform like almost every metal band. There isn't even a specified decision upon this subject! Metal music is forbidden in Iran; that's all. So it becomes very simple. Doesn't it?
Probably most readers can't imagine at all what it means to be a banned act. Please tell us detailed how you work and what you have to mind.
Almost all we can do is to produce music. Unfortunately we cannot tour, so we write new stuff and try to home-record and -produce it. Then we release it illegally for the underground fans who may be interested. Meanwhile we try to find a global ear.
What do you have to fear as a banned act?
Almost nothing! Things couldn't get any worse. We ain't got a thing to lose, man! They have been very successful in decreasing our existence; we almost live like some hollow men.
What are your aims with Ahoora and how do you plan to reach them?
In fact we follow no more goals inside Iran. After the second album, which came out last September, we concentratedon the new era, that we feel that band has stepped into. We find our major goals in some free land, which happens to be outside of these borders. Naturally getting heard still remains the most important goal for us.
What were your main achievements with Ahoora?
I think our recent deal with Real2Can records is a great new chapter for us. This will take our music across the borders. Although it's not perfect in every detail. But it is a great chance indeed. Musicwise, I think, our second album ”All in Blood with You” is a major achievement for us.
Have you ever thought about moving to another country because of music? Why?
Thought about?! That’s been our main goal for ages now! And I think you could guess about the reasons. I think Iran is no place for music, or living either.
What does the band mean to you?
For me personally it's all I got. And I think the other guys share this feeling in their own separate ways
So thanks for the interview and good luck for your future!
Thank you very much for your time and dedication. Stay true and spread the word.
