TARTAREAN DESIRE WEBZINE

This interview with Felix from the Spanish grindcore band Looking For An Answer was done by Chris Rohde in June 2004.

First of all could you describe in your own words what people should expect when listening to Looking For An Answer?
Looking for an Answer is a grindcore crust band with “political” lyrics and a totally DIY attitude…

What is the reason for Looking For An Answer? I mean, what’s the message from the band lyrical wise? Or is LFAA just a way to punish people’s ears, and to release your anger?
Yes, I think it is a way to release our anger but this anger is focused trying to change things…we try to show the consequences of the actual human being behavior. The name of the band shows you what we are looking for…mankind is destroying the earth so we are destroying ourselves and the other individuals who live on earth too. All of us are vegans. We think that people should try to respect the other animal species (humans are animals too). The other animals like us have the capacity to get pleasure and to suffer in the same way we do, this is the reason to respect animals. Some people used to say “hey but we are rational animals” ok yes, we are rational animals so this rationality should be able to see the difference between ethic actions and cruelty actions. These people who think in that way are forgetting that not all humans have this rationality. I mean there are people with deep psychological disposability’s, and older people who are not able to rationalize and the babies (neonatos) they don’t have any rationality. The question now is; should we have the right to decide for their lives? We think no…the main thing to consider is if he/she has the possibility to feel suffering or pleasure. We know that animals like us have this possibility, so this is the reason why we should respect other animals. This is only an example of what we are trying to do with our lyrics…if anyone would like to get more info about animal liberation, becoming into veganism or so just write us…

In the last year I have been introduced to the Spanish grind scene. Along with Looking For An Answer, Unsane Crisis, Overnoise, and Hashassin, grind has been given a new life. What is the scene like in Spain? Are these bands an example of what Spanish metal heads are into?
Yes, we have had great grindcore bands in the past and now there are a lot of cool bands like you say…I would also like to mention DENAK (rip?), ZANUSSI, OVERPOWERING, NASHGUL, IRA ET DECESSUS, MACHETAZO, BUD SPENCER…etc etc if someone would like to trade stuff of these bands just write we could trade CD´s, EP´s etc…

What are the shows like in Spain? Is there a metal community, or are the shows varied when it comes to what type of people show up?
Here, the people who like extreme music go to the gigs. So you can see punks, metalheads, hardcore kids etc in the same show…no problem about it… There aren’t very many people into these scenes, so we know everyone…

Do the shows get violent? I mean LFAA is punishing death/grind. Can the shows get out of hand ever? In my mind, I can just imagine the pit getting absolutely thrashing mad during one of LFAA’s shows.
No, never! Yes, as you say sometimes at a Looking for an Answer show the pit can get absolutely thrashing mad, but as I told you we know all the people. So it’s a mad but friendly and “peaceful” pit.

For some time now grindcore has lost it’s edge. There hasn’t been too much growth in the music, and the genre met its peek years ago. That’s what most people think, and it is true to a certain extent. Until I heard the bands mentioned above, I was starting to believe grind was dead as well. Except in Spain. Why is it that grindcore is flourishing over there?
I think that like in other things, grindcore was a trend for some people and now there are other trendy styles of music. People/Bands are just victims of fashion and follow a new trend like: neo crust, “noisecore”, emo etc etc etc…grindcore was always there from Napalm Death to this very day. I think that there will always be bands playing grindcore everywhere…

From talking with you I know that LFAA now has a living drummer. How is this working out? Because on the split with Kontraattaque, you guys programmed the drums on a computer. Is your new drummer capable of blasting out the brutal grind the way it sounds on the LFAA/ Kontraattaque split?
Hehehehe yes of course…man against the machines!!! Yes Moya is totally capable in playing that way and faster than it. We have new material recorded that will be release by Bad People records (USA) with a human drummer. We will be recording for a complete CD on First Blood Family (USA) next month. In the beginning we programmed the drum parts because we didn’t have a drummer, but this problem is no more with Mr. Moya aka “calypso grind”.

I’m sure that playing live is much easier now with a drummer?
Yes it is…it’s great to play with real drums. The sound, the effect, the energy you get etc etc etc…

From what I understand, you programmed the drums for the split with Kontraattaque. Do you play drums at all?
Yes, I programmed the drums for the split with Kontraattaque and for the full length CD on distortion records (Sweden). For sure I play drums, it’s a real vice. To be honest though, I can’t play like Moya hehehehe…

Have you guys ever thought of getting together with Unsane Crisis, Ekkaia, Overnoise, Hashassin, to tour other countries as sort of a Spanish Attack?
WOW!!!! It would be awesome mate!!!! We have planned a European tour with Looking for an Answer, but we will never do anything with the “Spanish attack” name hehehehe… No matter where the noise comes from…

What are the influences that have helped create LFAA? What bands and musicians influenced you as a guitarist? And as a band, what other bands have influenced the rest of LFAA?
All of us listen to absolutely all music styles…but Looking for an Answer’s main influences are bands like: Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Extreme Noise Terror, Brutal Truth, Carcass, Disrupt, and a lot of other metal bands…

Now, what’s in the future for LFAA? Any new recordings or touring scheduled?
Yes we have planned some new stuff to release:

Looking for an Answer “buscando una respuesta” 12”Lp (throne records), a CD version on a compilation CD (Bad people records), Looking for an answer / Zanussi split 7”EP, Looking for an answer / Overpowering split 7”EP, Looking for an answer / Ira Et Decessus split 10”LP, Looking for an answer CD on First Blood Family records (USA), Looking for an answer / Catheter split 7”EP (Parade records)…and then we will try to get out and tour Europe…

Okay, I’m going to mention five or so names, could you write what ever comes to your mind first:
Dimmu Borgir: I have just two albums of theirs…

Kerry King (Slayer guitarist) or Jesse Pintado (Napalm death guitarist): both are great, and they have created some of the best riffs ever on earth…

Looking For An Answer: ´till death

Ozzy Osbourne: freakie guy, heavy metal family…

At the Gates or The Haunted: both!!! Swedish sound rules!!!

That about wraps it up. Is there anything else you want to add Felix?
Ok, just to say a big thanx to you Chris to give us the opportunity to write some of our ideas. So you know, if anybody would like to get more info about animal liberation, veganism or just about the band or our labels-distros just get in touch ok?
