This interview with Hempa Brynolfsson of Mykorrhiza was done by Vincent Eldefors in September 2002.

Mykorrhiza rose in the ashes of the early Stockholm based death metal band Excruciate but this time the approach is more diverse and experimental. Band leader Hempa Brynolfsson took some time to answer our questions.

Hello, how are you doing?
Hi there Vincent !! I feel great.

Could you tell us a little about how Mykorrhiza was formed? As I understand you were in fact trying to resurrect your old band Excruciate?
Yes, I tried to resurrect Excruciate in early 2001. But I felt that the other guys couldn't give 100 %, so I met up with drummer Martin Karlsson. At first we had a vision to play brutal Grind-core, but the style changed into some kind of Death/Grind/Black/Heavy-Metal...

Excruciate was put to sleep in 1993, have you been out of the music scene completely during these years?
I've been in some bands/project over the years, but nothing have been 100%. But now I felt that I wanted to do something again.

Your drummer Martin Karlsson is rather unknown to me, could you tell us something about his previous bands Sin and Stairland?
Martin: Sin is a rock band, and Stairland is a Metal/Industri band.

I think your sound is similar in style to Necrophobic, do you agree?
No, Necrophobic have their own sound/style. And so do we. But both groups are great and that's the only thing that is similar. Ha ha ha !!!

Who writes the music?
I do the musical parts, and then we arrange it together (me & Martin). Martin have lots of ideas about the rythm structure, and then I make some cool riffs to complete the idea.

You released your first MCD in July this year, what has the response been like so far?
The response have been very good around the world. But the production could have been better...ha ha ha !!!

I had a hard time finding the title of the album, does it have a title...?
No title. Just Mykorrhiza....ha ha

Will you be playing live with the band or is it just a studio project?
At first this was just a studio project. But we've been asked to play live some times. And we have some session members to help us out if we will do a gig.

How did you end up signing with Konqueror Records from Singapore? I must say that I have never heard of the label before...
The guys who have K.R are old fans of Excruciate. And we have been in contact with each other some time. At first we supposed to do something with Excruciate, but then I thought that Mykorrhiza was more interesting.

The vocals from Blackshine's Anders Strokirk really make you stand out from most other death metal bands, will he help out the band in the future as well?
Yes, Anders is a session member and will help us out with the vocals on the next album too. We'll have some more people helping out with the vocals on the "Shattering Dreams" album.

I know that you are working on a full-length album right now, what can we expect from this?
This album is more melodic and the song structure is more complex than the MCD. You can expect a very good album....ha ha ha !!!

Ten years ago there was a very vivid and exciting death metal scene in Stockholm, what do you think of the metal scene of the Swedish capital today?
I think that we still have a respected scene here in Stockholm with bands like Unleashed, Grave, Necrophobic and other good bands.

What are your top five albums of all time?
Slayer "Reign In Blood"
Morbid Angel "Altar Of Madness"
Iron Maiden "Iron Maiden"
Paradise Lost "Lost Paradise"
Sepultura "Beneath The Remains"

Do you listen to any other music than metal? If so, what?
Pink Floyd, Björk, Kent... etc.... But mainly METAL !!!!

Now to my very own right or wrong section, you are just going to tell us whether you think the following activities would be right or wrong:

a) If someone killed Hitler prior to his mass murder campaigns.

b) To burn down a church because it's "evil".

c) To burn down a church because it represents oppression.

d) Sado-masochism.

e) Death penalty.

f) To lie if it will be of benefit to yourself.

g) Censorship.

h) Religion.

i) Communism.

Any final words for your fans?
Look out for our new album "Shattered Dreams"...IT KILLS !!! CHEEERS !!

Thanks a lot for the interview and good luck with everything in the future!
