TRAIL OF TEARS
TARTAREAN DESIRE WEBZINE
This is an old e-mail interview with the Norwegian gothic doom metal band Trail Of Tears which was conducted by Vincent Eldefors in September 2002.
Hello, how are you doing?
Right now I‘m doing just fine. I am excited about our latest CD.
You are soon to release your new album "A New Dimension Of Might", are you happy with the outcome?
Yes. We are satisfied with the final result. We think that we have developed in the right direction. I think we will work furher on in this direction for our future releases. But of course we will add new elements to our music in the future.
While including more black metal influences in your music I personally feel that you have moved closer to the Tristania sound, do you agree with me?
I can agree with you to a certain level. On “A new dimension of Might” we have used more choirs and clean male vocals which you in some ways can relate to Tristania. We also have the “Soundsuite”-atmosphere in the sound. Beside those arguments, I would say we`re different from Tristania.
Does the success of Dimmu Borgir have anything to do with your change of direction?
The fact that Dimmu is a successful band has not influenced us. We think they are a very good band, but we are influenced by their music to a certain point, not their success by selling a lot of CDs. They are in their own league.
No more mean questions now... Do you all write the music together or are there some of you who carry a heavier burden than others?
Mainly it`s Frank and me who has created most of the music. We have contributed with most of the themes and riffs. But of course everybody in the band put their edge into the music. Ronny does all the lyrics. It`s not a problem for us being 7 persons.
You have left DSFA Records for Napalm, weren't you happy with the support from DSFA or was it just time to move on?
We have to say that DSFA has done what they could for us. They helped us out of the rehearselroom and gave us a deal, and helped us with tours and festivals. But lately we have in a way slipped a part from them. We wanted to go on, get bigger. That`s why we signed up with Napalm Records. We think they can do what it takes to get us some steps closer to success. We have a very good dialogue with Napalm. Both them and us are in common to do a good job.
Many of your fans were probably a little sad when Helena Iren Michaelsen "left" the band, have everything worked out to the best with Cathrine Paulsen? No plans to work with Helena again now that she has returned to Norway?
Cathrine are doing a great job for us. She fits very good into the band. She is still young, but that has not been a problem. We won`t work with Helena again.
Have you stayed in touch with your former members Ales Vik, Vidar Uleberg and Michael Krumins? What have they been doing since they left the band?
We speak with Vidar, Ales and Michael now and then, not as much as we used to. We are still good friends. Vidar plays in a speed-metalband called Guardians of Time now. Ales doesn`t do music any more. Michael plays in a coverband.
Do any of the current members have projects outside of Trail Of Tears?
These days we haven`t got projects beside Trail of Tears. Ronny used to be a little involved with Bloodred Throne and Scariot.
Where do you rather go - gothic clubs or metal clubs? Why?
I go to both goth and metalclubs because I`m into both styles, personally and musically. I just want to get drunk!!
What are your top five bands of all time?
Faith no More, Dream Theater, Emperor, Portishead and Opeth.
Now to my very own right or wrong section, you are just going to tell us whether you think the following activities would be right or wrong:
a) If someone killed Hitler prior to his mass murder campaigns.
b) To burn down a church because it's "evil".
c) To burn down a church because it represents oppression.
e) Death penalty.
f) To lie if it will be of benefit to yourself.
a: right, b:wrong, c:wrong, d:wrong, e: right, f:wrong, g: wrong, h: wrong, i: wrong.
Any final words for your fans?
Hope you will like “A new dimension of Might”!
