TARTAREAN DESIRE WEBZINE

This interview with the guitarist Olaf Thörsen of Vision Divine was done through e-mail in March 2002.

Hello, how are you doing?
I'm fine thanks, here there's a good spring-like weather here in Italy...

You have now released your second album "Send Me An Angel", are you happy with the result?
Yes, definitely! It's a big step ahead and if it's true that probably the first album was easier to memorize and it had some very great choruses that were staying in your brain, it's also true that this album was so much important to us to give Vision Divine our own identity, and this is the reason why we liked this new direction. Sometimes you need to dare and change something, even if you were feeling comfortable already... I, Fabio and all the guys really needed to feel ourselves not stucked in our first release...

I know that there have been some problems getting this album released, why was it delayed?
Nothing serious, just some problem with the printing of the booklet. The album was planned to be released in November, and due to this problem it would have been released not before December, a very bad Month here for a Metal Release, so our Distributor decided together with our label to choose January.

I have to say that Atrheia Records is unknown to me, how come you signed to this label in the first place? Are there any other bands on the label?
We simply wanted a real brand new label, and even if Atrheia is so new, people inside are very professional and well known in the Italian music Business... It's not a surprise then if i tell you than now, after Vision Divine, they signed Angra and Warlord for Italy! As you they are growing very quickly and professionally, and more than everything, with them we are totally free to play whatever we want, while in other Labels of course we would have been pushed to make just COPIES of our bands Labyrinth and Rhapsody...

The album cover is very dark this time, why did you choose this design?
'Cause it fits perfectly with the music inside... We asked the Painter to realize this, and we asked exactly for the angel of the first cover Dying in the arms of another strong Angel. This means to us that when an album dies a new one has to come, so never spend too many tears or time looking at the past... Look ahead!

Your first album was more uplifting and keybord based than the new one which relies more on heavy guitars, will this be the Vision Divine of the future?
Don't think so, this album was importat to us,as i said, to demonstrate people and ourselves that we are able to do something different...next album, with this certainty, will go a step ahead i think, even if it's too early to tell you anything...

The band name and the lyrics of your songs tend to show a religious band. Do all of you believe in God?
We believe that Something has to exist in the Afterlife. Everything is too much perfect to thing Nothing did it... Our live is a continue walk in which i try to prepare myself for the BIG TRIP...

Your band members are involved with several other rather big bands, is there enough time for Vision Divine?
Of course YES, otherwise we wouldn't have even started it. If we do something then we like to do it great...

The album was finished in September last year, what have you been doing since then?
we played a lot, including a 1 Month Southamerican Tour as headliners...and preparing the new album has been very hard and stressing, right again because the changes we wanted to include...

What can one find in your cd player today?
Mmmm well...in this moment i have A-ha (the new single FOREVER NOT YOURS) playing, and i really love this band! Generally i listen to Fates Warning and you well know Swedish guy Malmsteen ehehehe!

The power/epic metal scene in Italy has virtually exploded during the last five years, what do you think keeps Vision Divine ahead of the rest?
Simple: Me and Fabio have been the very first ones to start this new Wave in '95 with the first Labyrinth EP Piece of Time and in '96 with our first full lenght No Limits. So we are one steap ahead to everyone here in this music, and as you see, while others are simply playing the music we already did, now we are looking ahead for the new Step. I'm not meaning anything like " EIH WE ARE THE BEST AND ALL THE REST IS SHIT"...I hope you understood the real meaning...

What plans and goals do you have for the nearest future?
We are going to play our second tour in South America, and then we'll play Wacken the 2nd of August. Between this we'll play a tour In Italy of course and then some other festival along Europe, waiting hopefully for a good chance for a tour...

Any final words of wisdom?
We are not wise, or we shouldn't play this crazy music in Italy! ehehhee... Just give us a chance, and if you already know us for the first album, then you will need to listen to Send me an Angel at least 2 times, before you'll understand this one doesnt' want to copy it....
