Maniac's Nova Express becomes Sehnsucht
2008-10-05
NOVA EXPRESS, the recently announced noise/darkwave/ambient project set up by SKITLIV front man Maniac (ex MAYHEM), has undergone a name change. The band, comprising Maniac himself on vocals and guitars, GALLHAMMER’S Vivian Slaughter on bass, sax and backing vocals, and SKITLIV guitarist Ingvar on guitars, will now be called SEHNSUCHT.

Commenting on the name change, Maniac’s manager said “As the song writing progressed, the name NOVA EXPRESS didn’t quite seem to fit the atmosphere Maniac and Ingvar were creating, so really it was a case of finding one that better suited what everyone in the band were setting out to ultimately achieve. The word “SEHNSUCHT” seemed much more appropriate and we decided to go ahead and make the change now, rather than wait until we get further down the road, when a name change would become more complicated”.

The band is already signed to the UK’s Cold Spring label and work on SEHNSUCHT’s first album, which has a working title of “Narrow Birth”, is expected to be completed at the end of this year.

Maniac will also shortly be completing work on the first SKITLIV album “Glem Aldri Korset”. Aside from Ingvar, the Doom/Black/Noise project includes SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth on guitars and sculptor Spacebrain on bass. The difference between the two bands was recently described by Maniac’s manager: “Where SKITLIV is very much Maniac’s unpredictable offspring, the band is all about extremes and expecting the unexpected, SEHNSUCHT, on the other hand, is its more thoughtful, introspective, sibling”.

A track by SEHNSUCHT can be heard on the band’s official MySpace page at www.myspace.com/sehnsuchtofficial. “Immaculate Fix”, which includes eerie backing vocals by CURRENT 93’s David Tibet, is un-mixed and un-mastered and is still missing Vivian Slaughter’s input.

Takara sign with ProgRock Records
2008-10-04
TAKARA was originally formed in August of 1987 by guitarist Neal Grusky. In 1990, Takara with Jeff Scott Soto producing and singing, entered into the studio to record new songs what would become their debut CD. In 1992 Takara added new members, Robert Duda/Drums and Gary Schutt/Bass who would become a part of the Takara debut CD.

Zero Corporation (Japan) and Now and Then records (Europe) offered Takara a record deal and "Eternal Faith" was released in December 1993. This CD entered the Burrn Charts at number 16, and European charts at number 8. Things were beginning to happen for this young rock band.

After a number of albums that included charting in Japan and various line up changes, Takara is returning with once again new band members and new attitude. Fans who have stuck by the band through all the changes and years of waiting will be pleased with what's in store for Takara in 2008. Takara is reemerging in 2008 with several albums coming out at consecutively. For this new release Takara have added Brazilian vocal sensation Gustavo Monsanto to the band, as well as Yngwie Malmsteen drummer and bassist Patrick Johannson and Bjorn Englen, as well as long time Takara keyboardist Brook Hansen and a special return by Jeff Scott Soto on backing vocals.

Neal Grusky had this to say: "It is with great pleasure that I'm announcing that Takara has signed to Shawn Gordon's Label Progrock records. I am very excited about this new Takara album "Invitation to Forever". Our new album has all the distinctive trademark sounds that you might expect from a Takara album, just with a little bit more edge than previous albums. We feel the match between Shawn and Progrock and Takara will be an incredible partnership in a very modern, and ever changing music business terrain. Shawn being a musician understands the needs of his bands, and works to find a
compromise that in the end, the fans and press will agree that is the new future for the industry.".

"Yet again I get to work with a band I've been a fan of, and local to me to boot. What's great about working with Neal is that he really understands the business part of this business as well as being an amazing musician, so it's a simple matter to jump back and forth between topics, not to mention this is a smoking album that is a great listen.", said Shawn Gordon, President of ProgRock Records.

2008-10-04
Joacim of GENERAL SURGERY sent us an update about the band 's upcoming album recording :

“ As of today (2nd of October), we have once again entered the filthy and repulsive confinements of Off Beat Studio to record our 2nd still untitled full length album. 20 songs will be recorded, and we'll pick the best material to surface on the release. Some new titles to be included are Plexus Necrosis, Exotoxic Septicity, Necronomics and Ichor. Due to scheduling conflicts, the new effort will be self-produced and will not utilize the services of Fred Estby as previously reported.

We hope to finish the recording by mid November and the release is scheduled for Feb/March 2009. More news on the album and possible sound snippets as we progress.

To backtrack a little, we want to say thanks to everybody that came out to our shows during the summer and a special thanks goes out to the crowd at the Brutal Assault fest which was our biggest yet. Thanks for the gore support!

For the 3rd year in a row, we'll play at Tantogćrden in Stockholm with Regurgitate and special guests Gadget. The date is Friday 31st of October. Tickets are available now at Repulsive Records and Sound Pollution.”

2008-10-04
Switzerland’s MUMAKIL have recently entered the studio to begin work on their Relapse debut.

The follow-up to MUMAKIL’s debut full-length Customized Warfare, is being recorded in the band’s hometown of Geneva. MUMAKIL drummer Sebastien Schacher recently checked-in from the studio with an update: “We have finished with the drum, bass, and guitar tracks and will begin with vocals next. This new album will be even more brutal, faster, and "punkier" than our first CD Customized Warfare. There will be less "groovy-brutal-death" parts but more dark and crusty riffs supported by fast blast-beat attacks. We rather chose to propose the punk and brutal side of our music. The album will be titled "Behold the Failure" and it will be a kind of an anthem to our great world in perdition.“

MUMAKIL has written roughly 26 new tracks for Behold The Failure. Advance song titles include “Doomed”, “Brothers In Slavery”, “Black Sheep”, “Wish You The Worst”, “Mass Murder Institution”, and “Pigs On Fire”. Behold The Failure will see a Spring 2009 release date.

MUMAKIL has announced a number of November and December tour dates in Switzerland and France. A listing of dates and cities can be found here with more to be announced soon. MUMAKIL has also recently released three new tracks via the Relapse Records Slimewave 7” series and CD compilation.

Zao recording new album
2008-10-03
Legendarily influential heavy music act ZAO is in the studio working on a brand new album, the followup to their 2006 record, The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here. As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis and Daniel Castleman are heading up the proceedings, together with Zao's Scott Mellinger, for what is shaping up to be another monumental ZAO album.

"We simply can not wait for everyone to hear these new songs," says longtime guitarist Mellinger. "We have not been on the road since the Demon Hunter and Throwdown tours in 2006, which has given us plenty of time to get our wits about us and to really concentrate on creating the best batch of material we possibly can."

Zao's Where Blood & Fire Bring Rest was recently hailed as "one of the most the most influential albums of 1998" by Alternative Press magazine. That album, which introduced frontman Dan Weyandt to the heavy music scene, and followup Liberate te ex Inferis, which introduced guitarist and songwriter Mellinger, continue to be cornerstone albums to a new generation of bands drawing influence from Zao's dark, passionate and creative music.

"Zao is a band that has influenced all types of bands in the heavy music genre, from the Deftones and to my band," offers Lambesis. "I'm very excited be a part of bringing them the production their band has always deserved. This record will be the Zao sound that fans and musicians like myself have been waiting to hear for a long time."

The lineup for this ZAO album is the same as The Fear...: Longtime co-conspirators Weyandt and Mellinger alongside bass player Martin Lunn and drummer Jeff Gretz (From Autumn to Ashes). "Recording Jeff Gretz's drums was the most relaxing and professional studio experience I've ever been a part of," boasts Lambesis. "That guy is a true pro and the standard by which I will judge every other drummer I record at Lambesis Studios in the future."

ZAO's two Ferret Music albums, The Fear Is What Keeps Us Here (2006) and The Funeral Of God (2004), are among the biggest selling and most important in the band's impressive catalog. Funeral was produced by Erik Rachel (Every Time I Die) and The Fear... was recorded by Steve Albini (Nirvana). The band has toured with In Flames, Trivium, Shadows Fall and in the past took bands like Underoath and Unearth on tour as their opening acts.

"If the melodic end of the kingdom has been taken by Killswitch Engage, then the extreme end belongs to Zao, no question." -- Metal Hammer

ZAO's new album will be released in 2009.

Nuclear Blast
Wintersun confirmed for Bloodstock
2008-10-03
Bloodstock is pleased to confirm that Finnish Metallers WINTERSUN have been confirmed as a UK Exclusive for next years Bloodstock Open Air 2009. This will coincide with the bands long awaited new album tentatively entitled Time which will also be out in August 2009 .

The amazing artwork from the self-titled debut album "Wintersun", courtesy of Necrolord already gives you a hint where this act might come from, exactly, Finland! Hailing from the land of the thousand lakes where the winters are long and cold, WINTERSUN is the new project of singer and multi instrumentalist Jari Maenpaa, who recently left his former band ENSIFERUM.
Powerful and majestic with a lot of energy, the music of WINTERSUN mainly flows with great melodies influenced by folk and Scandinavian traditional music. If you enjoy bands like AMORPHIS (in their early days), CHILDREN OF BODOM, FINNTROLL or ENSIFERUM, "Wintersun" is the right choice for you! Lyrically the album deals with mastermind Jari's life, feelings, emotions, hallucinations and dreams, facts that make the record a very personal piece of work.

Beside Jari, drummer Kai Hahto from the Finish Grindcore/Death Metal band ROTTEN SOUND plays on "Wintersun" and provided the album with a hellish pummelling in all or more of the right parts.

The rest vocals, guitars, bass and programming was done completely by the perfectionist Maenpaa. They both managed to create a diversified song spectrum from speed metal tracks over heavy guitar tracks to bombastic mid tempo opuses. While fast songs like opener 'Beyond The Dark Sun' and 'Winter Madness' stress out the high technical abilities of WINTERSUN, epic songs with big choruses like 'Sleeping Stars' and 'Death And The Healing' show the unique feeling of Jari for emotional and melancholic melodies. The vocals always fit perfectly to the present mood Jari masters everything, no matter if you take melodic clean vocals, brutal screams or Viking-like chants.

The band is delighted to be performing at next years Bloodstock Open Air Festival this will be a long overdue UK appearance for Wintersun and will be their ONLY UK show for 2009!

Bloodstock takes place on Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th August at Catton Hall, Walton on Trent in Derbyshire.

Criminal sign with Massacre Records
2008-10-02
Anglo-Chilean thrash masters CRIMINAL are proud to announce their signing of
a new recording deal with Germany's Massacre Records. The band will enter
the studio in September to record its sixth studio album for an early 2009
release. The follow-up to 2005's “Sicario” will be released in a limited
edition package including a bonus DVD.

Vocalist/guitarist Anton Reisenegger states: “It's great to be on a label
like Massacre, that has carved its niche in today's overcrowded market
through hard work and dedication. We are looking forward to a long and
productive collaboration.

“I have nothing but good things to say about the staff at Metal Blade
Europe,” the frontman comments on the band's former label, “but the
company's priorities were clearly somewhere else, so it made no sense for us
to continue working together. I honestly wish them all the best for the
future.”

Formed in the early 90s in Santiago de Chile by ex-Pentagram mastermind
Reisenegger and guitar virtuoso Rodrigo Contreras, CRIMINAL were combining
elements of thrash, hardcore and death metal long before the term
“metalcore” was even thought of. The band enjoyed a meteoric rise to the
forefront of the South American metal scene, including five-digit album
sales, shows with the likes of Kreator, Sepultura and Slayer and a
nomination for Best Rock Video at the MTV Latino Video Music Awards, but was
faced with severe personal and business problems around the turn of the
decade. Reisenegger and Contreras then decided to relocate to the UK,
regrouping in a half-Chilean, half-British line-up. Since then, the band has
played on major European festivals such as Wacken and Summer Breeze, as well
as support shows with bands such as Chimaira, Six Feet Under, Brujeria and
Lamb of God.

CRIMINAL's latest studio offering, “Sicario”, was hailed by the press as one
of the finest thrash metal releases of 2005 and was voted into the Top Ten
Albums of the Year by the readers of Terrorizer magazine. At the same time,
the band's status in their home country remains unbroken, as evidenced by a
four-page feature in the Chilean edition of Rolling Stone magazine and a
recent show supporting Megadeth in front of over 14,000 metalheads.

CRIMINAL is:

Anton Reisenegger – vocals, guitar
Rodrigo Contreras – lead guitar
Zac O'Neil – drums
Dan Biggin – bass

RATM to record new album?
2008-10-01
Reunited political rock act Rage Against The Machine are apparently readying to record their first album of new material in nearly ten years. The report says that the band is in talks of recording their new album for their longtime label Sony and expect to release it in 2009, a source explained: "We're hopeful, but a new album is far from definite."

Frontman Zack de la Rocha, who just recently started a new band One Day As A Lion, also spoke to Los Angeles Times last month about the possibility of new material, saying:

"We're going to keep playing shows - we have a couple of big ones happening in front of both conventions. As far as us recording music in the future, I don't know where we all fit with that. We've all embraced each other's projects and support them, and that's great."

The band was on hiatus since 2000 before re-uniting for a few live events in 2007.

All the while, the accolades continue to pour in: 'Roadie Crew Magazine' organized a poll in which 330 respected rock guitarists were asked to vote for their favorite guitarist of all-time. Malevolent Creation news
2008-09-29
Guitarist Phil Fasciana of the long-running Florida extreme metallers
MALEVOLENT CREATION has issued the following update:

"I know it has been some time since we have said much or updated things
lately, but finally there are European tour dates posted on our MySpace page
and there are more coming!!!!! Also, after much consideration and long talks
between the three original bandmembers of MALEVOLENT CREATION (Brett
Hoffmann - vokills; Jason Blachowicz - bass; Phil Fasciana - lead guitar) we
have decided to stop fucking around!!!! Just like all bands, we too have
had our share of personal problems that have delayed things a bit. But we
have to decided to continue touring around the world and after we return
from our headlining tour of Europe with support from the mighty VITAL
REMAINS and our friends from Florida WYKKED WYTCH in December, we will start
the pre-production for a shitload of new MALEVOLENT CREATION songs for our
11th full-length studio release. We are also going to re record some songs
from our third CD, 'Stillborn', and also record some very cool cover songs
from some of our favorite bands when we were little metalheads. Of course,
there will be no suprises or weak material involved with these recording
sessions and we are seriously talking about writing the fastest album we
have ever written. I know all our CDs have a lot of fast songs, but this
time i think we really need to let loose and just kick some serious ass.

"Not many bands have had the opportunity to have been around as long as we
have, and everything could end at anytime. So before we decide to throw in
the towel, we are gonna throw down the hardest MALEVOLENT CREATION album
possible!!!!! The songs we have already started writing are so fast and
brutal that we don't want to mess with energy we have already created.

"Look for us on tour starting on Halloween, October 31st in Holland and
throughout Europe in all of November.

"Also, we have two new releases that are in stores and online now for sale.
We have the double DVD titled 'The Lost Commandments', which features two
ripping live shows from us headlining the killer Party.San Open Air Festival
2007 in Bad Berka, Germany and also a gig we played with the legendary kings
of Bay Area thrash EXODUS from Paris, France in 2004. The second release is
a bit of a rarity which is titled MALEVOLENT CREATON 'Live At The Whisky A
Go Go', recorded in 1999 on 'The Fine Art Of Murder' U.S. tour shortly
before we were arrested in Little Rock, Arkansas as we were passing through
on our bus. It was four days of hell that none of us will ever forget!!!! So
look for more action from MALEVOLENT CREATION soon and in the future!!"

MALEVOLENT CREATION, VITAL REMAINS and WYKKED WYTCH will team up for the
"Death Before Dishonor" European tour in November. Confirmed dates are as
follows:

Nov. 02 - NL Uden - Nieuwe Pul

MALEVOLENT CREATION's latest album, "Doomsday X", was released in the U.S.
in July 2007 via Nuclear Blast Records and in Europe in August 2007 via
Massacre Records. The CD was recorded and engineered at Mercury Recording
Studios in Pompano Beach, Florida by longtime friend and producer (and
sometimes session member) Gus Rios, and is said to be the most diverse
MALEVOLENT CREATION album recorded to date and "without a doubt their
fastest!!" Mick Thomson, guitarist for SLIPKNOT, contributed a "ripping"
guitar solo to the song "Deliver My Enemy".

Gemini Five part with guitarist
2008-09-27
Lead guitarist Dee Dee has very rapidly decided to leave the band due to private and personal reasons. His decision is understandable and accepted by the other bandmembers. - This is however something we could not predict and therefore some "last- minute-actions" need to be considered. The show tonight Sept 27th in Sundsvall [SWE] is forced to be postponed 'til later and the in-store acoustic appearance at Heron City in Stockholm is unfortunally cancelled!!!

The Stockholm show at Tantogćrden on Wednesday Oct 1st is still on thanks to Martin Sweet of CrashDïet whom is filling in temporarily on lead guitar. Stay tuned for more news and updates regarding the situation. We're very sorry for all the inconvenience.
