Twilight Of The Gods sign with Season of Mist
2011-10-26
Season of Mist just inked a deal with all-star band TWILIGHT OF THE GODS! Initially joining forces as a tribute band to BATHORY, singer Alan Averill (PRIMORDIAL), guitarists Rune Eriksen (AVA INFERI, AURA NOIR) and Patrik Lindgren (THYRFING), bassist Frode Glesnes (EINHERJER) and drummer Nick Barker (LOCK UP) recently started to write their own material, which should end up on a full-length album some time next year.

The band issued the following statement: "We are proud to sign a worldwide deal for TWILIGHT OF THE GODS with Season of Mist... So first question, why? The idea originally was to piece together an international band to pay tribute to BATHORY. Nothing more and nothing less. A challenge and a homage. We toured the BATHORY set last year and played some festivals here and there. We never say never again but some form of line was drawn under last years triumphant set at Ragnarok festival which made the whole journey seem worthwhile.

"We were asked to re-record BATHORY classics and offered this and that to make DVDs and live albums. Never in a million years was this going to happen... Yet the chemistry was so good between the five members we talked about writing our own material. It seemed a shame to file away the energy and synergy on a dusty shelf somewhere when new possibilities were open to all of us.

"Life after all is about new challenges and journeys so in the month of October the five members of TWILIGHT OF THE GODS convened in Southern Portugal for a writing session. On the back of this a contract was signed and things began to take shape. None of us in our respective bands and pasts have ever played straight forward Heavy Metal and this is what TOTG is shaping up to be... Sure there are some Epic parts and some 70s rock influences but the vast majority of the material sounds truly classic metal.

"Right now we are looking at going into the studio sometime in the first couple of months of 2012. So expect a full on Heavy Metal album crafted by a motley crue with over 40 albums experience within them and two decades each individually sharpening their swords..."

Susperia to release new album
2011-10-26
Susperia is back! And here it is, the much anticipated and talked about anniversary album, celebrating 10 years of album releases, available on the once in a lifetime special date of 11.11.11.

This album marks 10 years of releases, and at the same time a nice end of a circle where Mustis (ex-Dimmu Borgir), who participated on Susperias first demo in 1999, now returns after 12 years to once again put his magical touch on new, as well as old songs. A very fruitful cooperation which now has led to some fantastic re-recordings of some very popular, classic songs, now in complete symphonic versions. A brand new song has been recorded, with a massive orchestral theme. The contribution to this year's Eurovision Song Contest is of course featured. And to round up a celebratory album of this magnitude the right way, here it is finally, the entire infamous demo recording from 1999; "Illusions Of Evil" ! Remastered and officially released for the very first time.

Øyvind "Mustis" Mustaparta has been a guest musician in the band for a period of 6 months, and the result of this junction is finally ready. Really just a huge celebration of the long-time brotherhood of the band, and an even bigger thank you to the devoted fans worldwide.

What contributes to making this album so special now is the fact that Susperia, in their 12 year existence, have had the same line-up of members, without exception. This is very rare, and quite special not only in the metal genre, but in the whole music industry in general. Especially within bands consisting of 5 or more members.

This will also be vocalist Athera`s first release with Susperia since the near fatal heart attack in March 2009, and the following open heart surgery. In total this is the 7th release from Susperia.

Melechesh appear in comic
2011-10-18
Sumerian black/thrash metallers MELECHESH have just returned from their European tour as special guests of label mates SAMAEL. Mastermind, vocalist and guitarist Ashmedi offers the following positive summary:

“So far we have completed our fourth tour, plus a festival run in support of The “Epigenesis” album. Yet we still have some more gigs to announce.

Lux Mundi tour was a great experience for one thing the weather was great so that things like the flu, ice and floods were kept at bay, but more importantly touring with talented bands like KEEP OF KALESSIN and SAMAEL was a pleasure , both on a professional and personal level as well . Massive Music did a very good job as always - a professional crew which is more like family than anything else. The opening acts MINKUS, DARK END, FLUXIOUS, DEAD SHAPE FIGURE, NOCTEM, SIX REASONS TO KILL and INFERI all had something different to offer , which added spice and diversity to each night of the tour, plus the guys and gals in those bands were just superb to have around. Now it is time to sit and compose!”

Furthermore, French comic artist Fabrice Gagos has included a tribute to both MELECHESH members Ashmedi and Moloch to his weekly updated web comic by dedicating one of the main characters – Sayid – to the two. Here’s what the creator says about it:

“ ‘Ghouls of Nineveh’ is an ongoing web-comic featuring a pack of super-cool metal-heads fighting bloodthirsty Mesopotamian zombies for their lives after they’ve been awakened by mistake by a bunch of ultra-conservative Christians praying in their church. All of the above based upon some Mesopotamian legends, including goddess Ereshkigal and her long lost beloved, Nergal, god of plague...

Mesopotamia, ghouls, metal-heads and mysticism - I couldn't help but find that particular MELECHESH’s title fitted perfectly.

Most of all, I don't want to spoil you the fun, but I can tell you that Sayid, guitar player and PhD in archeology owner (character-tribute to Moloch and Ashmedi), will take part in the rescuing of his friends. Metal, friendship and fun to save the world – with a bit of gore!”

Ashmedi is delighted:
“Seeing how our music , song titles , lyrics , concepts, no matter how loosely related , inspire different artistic endeavours such as on this comic is satisfying and flattering to say the least! Plus I found it to be very entertaining and well done.”

Check out the English version of the comic at: http://www.brutalcorpse.com/gon/

The Prophecy 23 part with bassist
2011-10-18
Hey friends out there – After 5 wicked years and a fantastic summer with The Prophecy 23 I decided to knock of playing the bass guitar and to leave the band. For me it was a quite hard but necessary decision. Recently it wasn`t possible for me to summon up the energy and the passion The Prophecy 23 deserves, anymore.

I want to thank everyone who accompanied me on my way with The Prophecy 23, especially the Brutal-Thrash-Maniacs Hannes, Dennis and Flo for a wicked and crazy time, kickass gigs and all the partying. Thanks to the roadcrew, the merch ladies, Massacre Records and last but not least our fantastic, supportive fans.

Certainly I will play the upcoming gigs with the band until a new bass player and singer is found. There will be a last farewell concert soon. I hope to see you guys there to have some drinks together.
Stay brutal!
Tobias

The band regrets but respects his decision! The recent years were great and successful for THE PROPHECY 23 and Tobias has contributed a decisive part through his personality, his bass playing and his incredibly rough growls.

We had a great time as bandmates and will continue to have a killer time as buddies and friends while grillin', boozin' and hangin' around. And as BRUTAL THRASH MANIACS!

Cathedral to release live album
2011-10-13
"The best doom metal band of the past two decades." Albert Mudrian - Decibel Magazine/Choosing Death

In conjunction with Rise Above Records, Metal Blade will be releasing the double-disc live album Anniversary from UK mainstays and international cult act CATHEDRAL. Set for release on Monday, November 21st in North America, Anniversary captures CATHEDRAL in all their raw and live glory and marks the first official live album to be ever released by the doom metal legends. Recorded live in London, 2010, Disc 1 features Forest of Equilibrium in its entirety, delivered impeccably by the original lineup of Lee Dorrian on vocals, Garry Jennings and Adam Lehan on guitar, Mark Griffiths on bass and Mike Smail on drums. Disc 2 is a greatest hits set courtesy of the long lasting lineup featuring Leo Smee (bass) and Brian Dixon (drums) alongside Dorrian and Jennings.

Vocalist Lee Dorrian comments on the band’s first ever live album and the impending final live show: "The release of Anniversary is both exciting and sad for us. Exciting, as it is the first ever official CATHEDRAL live album, recorded at our twentieth anniversary show on Dec 3rd in London last year, where we reunited with our original line up and performed the entirety of or debut album Forest of Equilibrium for the first (and last) time ever. Sad, because December the 3rd this year will be the night we perform our last show ever, before calling it a day as a live band. So more than anything, we would like to dedicate Anniversary to everyone who has followed and supported Cathedral over the years. Your support really means and has meant the world to us – thanks and stay heavy!

Words by Dom Lawson, August 2011

… and so it ends as it began, with the grim but compelling sound of mankind’s most artful and potent response against the dying of the light: the almighty riff…sacred, remorseless, oppressive and sublime…it towers above us like a shadow cast by the collected follies of humanity itself, giving us succour and protecting us from the lure of the grave …

Whether you regard them as the saviours of doom metal, the rightful heirs to the Sabbathian throne, the masters of the arcane, profane and avowedly eccentric or merely one of the finest British heavy metal bands of all time, CATHEDRAL have made an indelible and undeniable mark on the heavy music scene over their two decades of sonorous, lethargic service. Led by vocalist Lee Dorrian and his perennial riff-deliverer Gaz Jennings, the band emerged at the dawn of the 90s amid the clattering clangour of an extreme metal scene that had simply forgotten how to slow down and synchronize with the miserly grind of tectonic plates and the ticking of time. Righteously inspired by Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Trouble, Candlemass, Saint Vitus and many other purveyors of superlative snail’s pace riff worship, CATHEDRAL made it their principal aim to resurrect the very concept of doom within the metal scene, both in terms of the musical subgenre that bore that name but also with regard to the haunting emotional might that had steadily been drained from the heart of heavy.

After grabbing the attention of many like-minded souls with their early demo recordings, Dorrian and the original line-up of the band released their debut album, the astonishing Forest Of Equilibrium, in December 1991, single-handedly reversing metal’s runaway momentum and dragging it back to its fundamentally slow, soulful and crushing essence. From that moment on, CATHEDRAL became revered guardians of true doom and embarked on a steadily mutating path towards total riff nirvana. Upping the pace for 1993’s The Ethereal Mirror, they embraced evolution with alacrity. By the time 1995’s The Carnival Bizarre arrived, Dorrian and Jennings had been joined by bassist Leo Smee and drummer Brian Dixon, thus cementing a formation and focus that would serve the band well over the next 15 years. The series of albums that followed veered from the kaleidoscopic psychomania of Caravan Beyond Redemption (1998) through to the blistered, necrotizing funeral grind of Endtyme (2001) and on to the wild progressive hues of 2010’s The Guessing Game, covering all points in between.

CATHEDRAL’s live shows were always celebratory affairs, as the band traversed the globe spreading the bleak gospel and sharing grandiose riffs with generations of lost souls. By the year 2010, it became clear that CATHEDRAL mission had been effectively accomplished, and Dorrian began the countdown to oblivion. The band played a 20th anniversary show at London’s O2 Islington Academy on December 3rd, reconvening that legendary original line-up to perform Forest Of Equilibrium for the very first time in its devastating entirety, followed by a bold stride through the rest of that glorious catalogue courtesy of that equally classic but more enduring latter-day configuration. Fans and friends travelled from all around this wicked world to witness the event and despite the fact that many British disciples were unable to get to London due to harsh weather conditions and a dismal public transport system, "CATHEDRAL acquitted themselves with humble grace and splendor. Urged on by the news that CATHEDRALwill completely retire from the mortal metal realm after one more show this coming December, the entire 20th anniversary gig is now to be unleashed as Anniversary, a double-disc extravaganza of crippling, ultra-doom that is as raw and uncompromising as these desolate days demand. Next year will see the release of The Last Spire, the final chapter in the CATHEDRAL story, but for now Anniversary is doom’s last word. And so it ends…

Hour of Penance enter studio
2011-10-13
Italian death metal band, HOUR OF PENANCE, will enter Cellar Studio in Rome on October 16th, with producer Stefano Morabito, to record their Prosthetic Records's debut, and fifth album overall.

Guitar player Giulio Moschini commented: "Following the tradition of releasing an album every two years, the time has come now and we're ready to hit the studio and record our fifth album. You've probably read the same words million of times on the band's press releases so I will not tell you how much better this album sounds and how much faster and more technical it is compared to the last one we did , BUT - we're fucking proud of this upcoming beast and we're sure you guys will love it! We know how much our fans are expecting from the new album so we worked as hard as we can to not disappoint any of them. Moreover, as some of you know, this will be the first album with a new line up and as you can imagine having a new singer and a new drummer helped us to renew and improve our sound, once again.. this will be like the rebirth of Hour of Penance, in a better shape of course !"

The band will be posting updates on their official Facabook page; "Like" the page now to keep up to speed! The new album is the follow up to last year's "Paradogma" (on Unique Leader) and will see a release in early 2012. More details of the release will be announced in the coming weeks.

Forged in the dark shadows of "The Holy Capital", this most unholy of quartets have steadily been making a name for themselves as one of the most intense, talented and impressive, both in the studio & live onstage, modern death metal bands around.

HOUR OF PENANCE spent most of the spring and summer touring the European festival circuit as well as a tour with DEICIDE, BELPHEGOR and THE AMENTA.

Unleashing a likely tour de force in maniacal death metal brutality, a celebration of music in it's darkest and most inhuman form and with a brand new worldwide signing to Prosthetic Records, HOUR OF PENANCE have ascended to an even greater height of precision and savagery. Every population has its cancer, every movement its enemies. Be the wolf amongst the flock. Embrace the barbarity!

Riot forced to cancel Hammerfall tour
2011-10-11
Due to complications from Tony's emergency oral surgery, RIOT is disappointed to announce that they will not be able to appear with Hammerfall as previously scheduled.

A routine dental checkup discovered a deeply infected root canal, and the infection had spread to the jaw and surrounding teeth. The only option was immediate surgery to remove the tooth, as well as a portion of the infected bone tissue, and to perform a large graft with healthy bone from the surrounding area.

Says Tony: "During the initial examination, my doctor gave me a puzzled look and then asked the question that put fear in my heart: 'Are you in a lot of pain?' I was then informed that I would be if this procedure was not performed ASAP. After the surgery, I was made aware of the extent of the bone graft, and the risk of dislodging fragments of implanted bone should I resume normal activity too soon."

"I was put on a liquid diet and limited to bed rest for several days, then informed that because of the location of the surgery, singing was out of the question for four weeks. As I write this I still have stitches in my mouth and have to limit my physical activity. The recovery period essentially wiped out any hope of sufficient practice time for a RIOT set list, and full recovery takes four months before the tooth can be replaced."

"We discussed all the options we could think of, the last of which was to perform the final 10 dates of the engagement with minimal practice on my part. In then end, though, everyone agreed that going out with my voice at any less than 100% would have compromised a show for which some fans have been waiting many years. With heavy hearts we made the only viable decision; to withdraw from the tour."

The entire RIOT organization would like to apologize to our record label, SPV, and thank them for supporting our decision. We have been assured that future European dates will be announced as soon as the appropriate schedule can be safely booked.

We would also like to apologize to Hammerfall, who have been extremely generous and supportive throughout this process. We look forward to meeting you all in the near future.

Finally we would like to apologize to our fans and friends who have sustained us throughout the reunion. We are as disappointed as you are, but you can be assured that RIOT will visit Europe as soon as possible. We're already confirming dates for early 2012 in the US, and we plan to support the release of 'Immortal Soul' as strongly as you have supported us for nearly a quarter of a century.

A special note to our Asian fans: these events will not have any effect on our plans to perform in Japan in 2012. Tony will be fully recovered long before then, and we look forward to bringing 'Immortal Soul' to you soon.

In the meantime, we hope that you enjoy the album as much as we have enjoyed creating it. Let us know what your favorites are so that we can bring them to you onstage next time we meet.

A last note from Tony: "I've been dying to sing this stuff since we finished the album, and being sidelined like this is a major blow. I'm doing everything I can to recover so that I can rebuild the voice you'll hear when the album is released. I know that you want nothing less. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for your support and good wishes."

All the best, and Shine On!

Guitarist Mark Jansen comments: “We are very happy about it! It shows us that we’re still on the right track and that following your heart while making music is the best thing to do. We have seen many bands coming and going but we're still around and we thank all our fans from all over the world for believing in us and supporting us!”
