REVIEW: Ásmegin - Hin Vordende Sod & Sø Napalm Records, 2003
9/10
Ásmegin - Hin Vordende Sod & Sø - cover art I heard about this Norwegian band a few months ago. One track I've heard was good, but I always like to estimate bands after albums, not songs. So now, after a few listenings of "Hin Vordende Sod & Sø" I must confess that it is a really good album. Ásmegin aim to merge traditional Norwegian folk music with metal. But it's too simple to compare them with bands like for example Finntroll or Storm. Ásmegin's music is much more rich of sounds and instruments. Ásmegin are certainly creative and have many ideas, which makes their music very interesting and full of surprising changes. All non-metal instruments like fiddle, Norwegian zither, harp, flutes, piano build a characteristic, fantastic climate and atmosphere which is really original. The lyrics are about old Scandinavian myths and, which is quite interesting, are linked in concepts. Second, third and fourth tracks are mini-version of "Peer Gynt" and ninth, tenth and eleventh are the saga "Valgalder". Once again I advice everyone to get to know this great album. If you're looking for enchanting and maximum differentiated material "Hin Vordende Sod & Sø" is definitly for you!
