The Finnish
experimentalists ...And Oceans continue their journey through the unknown
territories of music with their fourth full-length album entitled "Cypher"
with the subtitle "Insect Angels & Devil Worms". You never know what their
new material is going to sound like and this was also the case with this
album. Their last release was one of the most impressive black metal releases
I had heard in a long time when it arrived last year but this time they
didn't impress me as much as they did back then. This is still a very good
album and there is not one single bad song but it lacks the kind of "hit
songs" that were present on the previous one. ...And Oceans are one of the
most successful bands when it comes to mixing electronics with black metal and
they have done a very fine job once again. You might even call them the
Theatre Of Tragedy of black metal if you wish. They are for sure a lot more
extreme but some of the song structures and the electronic sampling actually
remind me of these Norwegian fellows, their last couple of albums that is.
Sometimes the vocals also sound a little like Marilyn Manson. You never know
what these guys are up to next but they are for sure one of the most unique
avantgarde black metal bands together with the Japanese band Sigh. Yet another
fine release from a band that will surely continue to surprise the world.
Suggestion for activity on a boring day: try to learn all the song titles by
heart...
