REVIEW: 13 Candles - Killing For Culture Def2Music Records, 2003
7/10
13 Candles - Killing For Culture - cover art This is the first time that I come in contact with the British band 13 Candles even though they have been around since 1992 and already released two full-length albums. This album was actually recorded in the year 2000 but whether or not this is a re-recorded version or not I do not know. Hearing the name of the band may get your brain drifting away towards the gothic genre and to some degree your brain is absolutely right about that. This is not a pure gothic metal or rock album though. The nice orchestral intro to the opening track is definitely a classically inspired piece and there are a lot of straight-forward riffing here as well that gets closer to 80s heavy / thrash metal than modern gothic metal. Without a doubt "Sapphire (Queen Of Dusk)" with its powerful flow and dual clean / black vocals is the highlight of this disc. The keyboards play an important role in the composing for 13 Candles, not only backing up the other instruments but also adding the right atmosphere with layers in the background. The rest of the songs are less straight-forward metal but more in the industrial / gothic vein with electronic samples and clean dramatic vocals. All in all 13 Candles have come up with an interesting concept and this is a nice crossover release that should attract people with many different tastes in music. The sound quality is also very high thanks to a professional recording at the Academy Studios together with producer Mags, a man that you probably know of if you are a fan of any Peaceville band. They still have some work to do in the song writing department but I certainly hope to hear more from 13 Candles in the future.
