REVIEW: 1853 - A Verdadeira História De Melvin Bell E Self-financed, 2001
5.5/10
1853 - A Verdadeira História De Melvin Bell E - cover art I could bet you a thousand dollars that you couldn't guess why this band is called 1853. The reason is, believe it or not, that in 1853 the first Brazilian beer was officially released. Just as if this wasn't enough they have named the first song of their self-financed debut album "18" and the final one "53". I can't help but like these guys and you may not be surprised when I tell you that they first met in a bar in 1995 and decided to form the band. The music they perform is apparently a mixture of heavy rock'n'roll and Brazilian popular music. Unfortunately it is a little too soft and insipid to reach my heart but they are nevertheless good musicians. I personally haven't had much interest for the rock scene but if Aerosmith is your kind of thing you may very well enjoy this album. It is always nice to hear that people aren't afraid of mixing more classic influences with the sounds of their own local music scenes and this is something that 1853 does fairly well. Most of the lyrics are also written in Portuguese. This I appreciate and this is real nice to listen to if you wish to do something else meanwhile such as talk to your friends or study for exams. The production is good and the music is well performed but it just isn't my cup of tea (I don't drink tea either...). Stand-out tracks: "Sem Nome".
