REVIEW: AN - Revelation I: World Minus Population Plague Productions, 2005
8.5/10
AN - Revelation I: World Minus Population - cover art From the land of a thousand lakes has again risen another dark and black act. Finnish band ‘AN’ are dark, harsh and cold. They are categorized as black metal but at times also do tend to sound and create some amazing death metal. Not that I feel the urge to categorize into perfection (unfinished business) but while encountering on the song ‘Let There Be Ebola Frost’ I really thought I was listening to the death metal masterminds of Bloodbath. On ‘Hammered ‘ a constant gallop like rhythm is accompanied by sounds of ironwork and other noises which makes it a cool track. On other occasions the bands Immortal, Burzum and Helheim also come to mind which I only see as positive influences. After a few enjoyable listens to ‘Revelation I: World Minus Population’ I would say that AN plays a perfect combination between quality black and death metal with also embracing some ambient sounds capes. It seems that the band was formed in 2002 with only having released an EP before this 36 minute lasting album. What I am trying to say is that although this is a fairly new band both the professionalism and musicianship of these three members is very high. AN’s philosophy is to promote total mass death and hate against mankind in a very unique form. On the musical aspect they have certainly done a good job to reflect those thoughts. We are definitely talking about quality underground music here with the emphasis on underground because only 600 copies of this album are being released. Until today I have no reasonable explanation to why the land of ‘Suomi’ is filled with so many capable artists who get inspired through a continuous source of feeling for melody and especially darkness.
