REVIEW: A Lower Deep - Trinity Self-financed, 2005
7/10
A Lower Deep - Trinity - cover art First things first, right? Well, I'm writin' so you have little choice in that matter, junior. Hailing from the other Birmingham (Alabama, USA -- not England) since 2000, A Lower Deep is mostly a Thrash-influenced Power Metal band. After releasing a demo in 2002, their first proper album, Parable Of The Thorn, debuted 2 years later. Appearances on some notable compilation albums included twice on ProgPower (V and VI). Now in 2005 their second full length effort, Trinity, is released and shows promise for a young, independent (and, really, unsigned) band.

What do you think of when you read "Thrash-influenced Power Metal"? Probably something along the lines of Nevermore or Iced Earth. Both comparisons are favorable, though Nevermore's influence has to be greater. Left Hand Solution is also invoked. The music here is primarily mid-paced with some faster and slower tempos to flesh out the album. For example, a full on Thrash romp follows an almost Doom styled dirge on "Sisyphus Resigned." The guitars and bass are pretty good, though a second axe would fill out the sound a bit. Sometimes the down-tuned riffs seem to make the vocalist work harder to be heard, but overall this is quality material with good leads.

Speakin' of vocals, the main voice is akin to Warrel Dane and occasionally Geoff Tate with backing vocals of the Death Metal and Goth varieties. My biggest complaint on this album is that the drums often sound overly digital. No surprise as the credits indicate there to be some drum programming. I was going to write that a real drummer would be helpful, but as of now the band have a full time member there. The future looks bright for A Lower Deep's blend of Power, Thrash, and Doom Metal. This is well displayed on Trinity and the record should be effective at garnering them more attention. If the Bronx Casket Co. is too "pop" for you, try out A Lower Deep.
