Hailing from possibly the only other nation
on Earth to contend for the war metal throne, Australia(the other being
Canada, of course), Abominator are an underrated band who deserve more credit
that they are given. With 3 demos and 1999's "Damnations Prophecy" to their
credit, this trio of fellow Commonwealth blasphemers writes raw and ugly metal
in the vein of Blasphemy and Bestial Warlust. Founding members Chris and
Andrew have penned 8 dark songs which shift abruptly in their rhythms, yet
possess a well-developed sense of melody, albeit an anti-melodic one.
Abominator also consistently write intelligent lyrics, making them a force to
be reckoned with, indeed. Chris' drumming is well-thought out and intense.
He'll move from straight 16th note blasts to an 8th note war march and over
to a triplet breakdown with crafty smoothness, then chop things up with a
slower part. Chris also splits vocal duties on "Subversions.." with former
full-time Abominator member Damon, giving the band both an urgent and hateful
enunciated range combined with low end death growls. On both bass and guitars,
Andrew goes from sliding black metal riffage to old school solos in "From
Flesh To Fire", then a more primitive angle in "Ignite the Ceremonial
Burning". It baffles me why Necropolis Records would abandon Abominator while
they were recording this album, yet doesn't surprise me that the war metal
hungry Osmose would pick them up shortly after for a 3 album deal. I think
that line-up woes are the only thing preventing Abominator from reaching out
and grabbing the world by the throat, and recommend them to fans of black
metal and, really, anything
extreme.
