Belgium’s answer to bands such as Carcass and Cannibal Corpse are back with a killer of an album. This glorious but terrifying piece of brutal death metal named ‘The Archaic Abattoir’ is maybe even the finest delivery yet by Aborted. These gore grinders have managed to top their previous release ‘Goremageddon’ with an even harder and more mature album. With a fourth full-length album and a couple of EP’s released over a rather short period of time the band has settled themselves at a comfortable leading status in the European gore scene. ‘The Archaic Abattoir’ is filled with brutal death grunts, constant double-bass drums, extremely heavy riffing and lots of rhythmic variations that automatically result in keeping the listener interested at all times. This record is also quite melodic but definitely not over the top. Nevertheless at times I hear some Soilwork touches in some parts of ‘The Archaic Abattoir’ which get transformed into more slower and bombastic oriented sections. A maybe strange song is ‘The Inertia’ because of its ‘groovy’ or ‘Rock & Roll’ feeling to it with the complementary lyrics ‘you are so beautiful’. Don’t be mistaken because it’s still heavy and brutal as hell. A touch of sarcasm maybe?
The gore image of this band is also present besides the music itself and therefore integrated in lyrics, artwork and the added sounds and voices in between tracks. Song titles such as ‘Voracious Haemoglobinic Syndrome’ speak for itself and keep the spirit of Carcass alive. Depending on the regular or limited edition versions the cover artwork is also different (keeping possible censured versions in mind) with one being more ‘shocking’ than the other. If you are familiar with Aborted’s debut album ‘The Purity Of Perversion’ you know what I speak of. So, if I haven’t convinced you yet then just listen to the tracks ‘Hecatomb’ and ‘Threading on Vermillion Deception’. Perfect examples of pure death and grind quality. The production is also excellent with mastermind Tue Madsen behind the knobs and responsible for so many quality releases lately. After a good 35 minutes the madness finally stops. For some maybe too short but I believe if the album would have been much longer I wouldn’t have endured it from beginning till end because it’s still very intense. Aborted have again honored their name worthy and have become a leading and reliable act in the scene. Hopefully this release will come with a fully earned breakthrough.
