REVIEW: Abscess - Horrorhammer Peaceville Records, 2007
6/10
Abscess - Horrorhammer - cover art Nocturno Culto of Darkthrone decided to pick up Abscess for his Tyrant Syndicate label (running under Peaceville Records) and this is the first result of the transatlantic cooperation. It is easy to see why Nocturno Culto enjoys the slightly primitive punk driven death metal of Abscess and the dirty, old-school production of "Horrorhammer" makes every piece of the puzzle fall into place. The production has however been cleaned up significantly since the early Abscess releases which might deter some old fans of the band. To further fuel the cult factor of this album it was recorded with Adam Munoz at Prairie Sun Studios where Possessed recorded their legendary "Seven Churches" album. I don't quite know what my stand on "Horrorhammer" is. At first I'm quite bored with the first half of the record since the songs are mediocre and far from memorable but with "When Witches Burn" they finally pick up the pace and "Four Grey Walls" is a solid song in the true Abscess vein. Other than that the album is a bit uneven and even though it could have been interesting had it been released ten years ago it fails to capture the old-school atmosphere.
