REVIEW: Abscess - Through The Cracks Of Death Peaceville Records, 2002
7/10
Abscess - Through The Cracks Of Death - cover art Abscess rose from the ashes of the bands Autopsy, Hexx and Immortal Fate in June 1994. The location was Oakland, California, and the new band came to be both sick and brutal. Today Abscess consists of Chris Reifert (Autopsy, Death, The Ravenous), Danny Coralles (Autopsy), Clint Bower (Hexx) and Joe Allen (Von). As you can see these guys are no newcomers to the extreme metal scene. This is the band's fourth full-length album but their first release for their new label Peaceville. This album was recorded at the Different Fur Recording Studios in San Francicsco where Autopsy also recorded their "Mental Funeral" album in 1990. The sound is perfectly adapted for a brutal death / grind release and with all four members handling the bass duty you can be sure that the result is a very dark and sinister sounding album. While standing with their feet firmly in the death / grind field they have also incorporated a great deal of both more traditional groovy metal riffs and also some thrashier sounds. All of this makes Abscess sound rather powerful but they do unfortunately not stand out clearly from the competition which is a shame because these guys are highly skilled musicians. The vocals are more of a monster growling kind than the usual grindcore gurgling but they do not impress me that much. A very good, solid release that will certainly appeal to fans of brutal death / grind with a twist. My favorite track is the doomy sounding "Tomb Of The Unknown Junkie" that has some kind of a Candlemass feeling to it.
