Abuse are one of a few western Canadian bands who
are combining death metal with the brevity and frenzy of grindcore. This
13-song album contains a few numbers off of their earlier demo, presented with
great production and packaging. Though the overall musical style of Abuse is
not something unique, their sadism/bondage theme most definitely is. It's as
if they are trying to employ the old Sex Pistols technique of using negative
public reaction and controversy to their advantage, thus transforming what
could be harmful criticism into publicity. With song titles like "Why do
Women Hate Me?" and "Pieces of Girl", Abuse is definitely not a band for
people who need inspiring or thought-provoking lyrics. But, much like Cannibal
Corpse, the music of Abuse is very strong, making up for their adolescent
theme. Bassist Mr.Nasty rips his instrument to shreds, backing up the
Suffocation-like breakdowns in parts and supplying extra flavor in others.
Vocalist Offal Consumer takes a fairly traditional approach to his delivery,
ranging from guttural lows to piercing highs. On drums, Bitchslapper is quite
impressive, pounding out severe blast beats as needed, but throwing in some
cute variations during the slower parts. He even breaks out some roto-toms on
"There's Something About Rape", which may cost Abuse points with purists,
but shows some imagination. On a comparative level, Abuse has moments akin to
Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Decapitated and Last Days of Humanity, and keeps
things interesting with lots of changes and some hilarious
samples.
