REVIEW: Abysmal Dawn - From Ashes Crash Music Inc., 2006
7.5/10
Abysmal Dawn - From Ashes - cover art After departing the band Rise, Charles Elliott (guitars/vocals) recruited his former Inhuman Visions bandmate Jamie Boulanger (guitars) and started Abysmal Dawn. The new unit, currently rounded out by Terry Barajas (drums) and Carlos Arriola (bass), have released a solid debut record, From Ashes, that shows musicianship to be at a premium with actual arrangements rather than just a bunch of riffs. Vocals range over much of the Death Metal spectrum from guttural roaring to higher pitched rasps (think a slightly less accomplished but perhaps more varied Corpsegrinder). Lead guitars are well played and complement the thick, downtuned riffs. The gurgling bass, provided by session bassist Mike Bear (Prototype), fills out the sound well while the drums, perhaps overly triggered, are frenzied but not manic. Aside from the intro, the songs are in the 3 to 4 minute range, staying long enough to leave an impression, but not long enough to really crush. At ~32 minutes in length, additional songs would have improved the overall effect of the record. Though not mandatory listening, Abysmal Dawn's From Ashes is a rather satisfying slab of Death Metal that promises much more to come. Get on the bandwagon now if slightly Blackened Death Metal is your cup of tea.
