REVIEW: Achaia - Under Siege self-released, 2009
8/10
Achaia - Under Siege - cover art Kind of hard to be fully objective about something like this at this point. Germany’s Achaia (pronounce that for me once, will ya fellas?) presents a fully actualized, well recorded and skillfully performed opening statement here, with six tracks all hitting the melodic death metal g-spot in a way that makes you feel a bit guilty. Each tune explodes from the speakers in a matter that must undoubtedly suckerpunch newcomers to the genre and also go down a storm live. Only problem for me is that I’m no spring chicken anymore and I don’t make too many gigs in dimly lit clubs out in Saarbrücken. So, from my old-timer Yankee vantage point, I’m often left tallying up the classic In Flames and Arch Enemy references and feeling a bit miffed in the process. No grandiose objection from me, mind you. If it adds nothing new to an established subgenre, well, it doesn’t take anything away from it, either, and since the MDM scene isn’t quite as annoyingly overstuffed as it was in, say, ought-one or ought-two, then I can dole out a bit of charitable indulgence for excellent genre clones such as this.
