Sounding somewhat like the bastard child of Nirvana and Candlemass, Acid Bath sludge loathingly through the 12 songs of "Paegan Terrorism Tactics" with a refreshing sense of passion and inventiveness. Vocalist Dax Riggs employs a melodic singing voice reminiscent of Kurt Cobain or Chris Cornell, mixing it up with a banshee scream that adds a freakish, demented spin on the music. The music itself could be desribed as 'doom/grunge metal', "Paegan Love Song" sounds very much like alternative grunge, with some suitably angsty lyrics 'You scream, I scream, we all scream for morphine!'. "Bleed Me An Ocean" is a rumbler that sludges past with Black Sabbath influenced riffs and grungy vocal melodies. "Graveflower" pulls back the heaviness a bit and injects it with some melody and subtlety. "Diab Soule" and "Locust Spawning" are both terrifying and heavy, reminding the listener that this is, in fact, a metal album, both employing stoner groove and pounding metal rage with equal power. "New Death Sensation", as well as "Dead Girl", show the listener a completely new side to Acid Bath. Dax's emotional lyrics and touching voice accompanies soft, introspective guitar, and exposes the calmer, more poetic side of Acid Bath. A band using a twin-pronged attack of disarming sludginess and calm, touching introspection, Acid Bath had a stylistic balance that was very much their own. If you have a liking for grunge and doom, "Paegan Terrorism Tactics" is a perfect hybrid of the two. If you ever wondered how Nirvana, Soundgarden or Pearl Jam would sound as metal bands, with a much more threatening sense of nihilism and heaviness, this is the album for you. The most likeable aspect of the music are the vocals, Dax Riggs was a talented man.
