The nu-metal trend is not only a major label phenomenon any longer. Addiction Crew is the name of an Italian band who have found themselves signed to Earache Records. The band was actually founded in 1996 by former MonumentuM vocalist Andrea Zanetti but this is far from MonumentuM's extreme metal. "Break In Life" is the band's label debut and shows a mature modern rock / nu-metal act with similarities to giants like Linkin Park and Guano Apes. I am especially fond of the female vocalist Marta Innox who joined the band for the recording of this album. She apparently used to perform with R n' B acts and shows much more of a personality than the male counterpart who sounds rather stereotypical and doesn't make much of an impression. The vocalists are incredibly important for nu-metal bands and Addiction Crew doesn't quite have what it takes at the moment but Marta shows that there is potential.
Musically these Italians have definitely been influenced by the modern American rock / nu-metal scene and there is no doubt that Earache are trying to ride on the wave of success following the big break-through of Evanescence just as Nightwish, Within Temptation and Lacuna Coil have the American orchestra to thank for their huge success lately. There are also plenty of vocal and sound effects on the album but it doesn't lack heavy chugging guitar riffs nor calmer and more emotional moments either. Addiction Crew tries hard to carve their own niche within an overpopulated and hyped up scene and they have come far. "Break In Life" is an accessible album that should easily find find itself played on both TV and radio, at least in their home country of Italy. Unfortunately the album still does very little for me. It is ok but it never engages or surprises and sort of just flows by as if being made up of one single, 40 minutes long song.
