REVIEW: Adrian Legg - Inheritance Favored Nations, 2004
8.5/10
Adrian Legg - Inheritance - cover art For those of you who don't already know Adrian Legg, a quick introduction would be to say that he is one of the greatest guitarists of our time. He has incredible technique and talent and he doesn't hesitate to use them in crafting wonderful melodies and musical pieces. I was lucky enough to see him perform live at a restaurant/bar a few years ago, and it was truly an amazing experience. His congenial attitude created a welcoming and warming atmosphere, and the stories and jokes he told between songs only enhanced the mood. His guitar work is in a word godlike. I have yet to see someone display such a fluid mastery of the technical side of the guitar along with a complete understanding of melody and harmony as Adrian Legg does on every album and during his live performances. So Yngwie is insanely fast, but where's the soul in his music? The fact is that there is none, that's why he's flamed as being a wanker. Adrian on the other hand, never gets caught up in himself or needing to show off his insane technique. His humble attitude is also charming and refreshing as opposed to some other guitarist virtuosos' blatant arrogance. Inheritance is more of the same from Adrian and he never ceases to impress me. The quality of the songwriting on this album is superb, as is his guitarwork (which is no surprise). I don't really have any particular favorites, and I think the only songs that I didn't like as much as the others were the ones with what seemed to be MIDI accompanyment. It just needed to be toned down a little so as to preserve some of the music's subtlety, rather than subvert it (like I feel it did). Listening to Adrian Legg is unlike anything else and although its cliche to say, his music and guitarwork will really take you away from wherever you are. If you're looking for blast beats or anything remotely heavy, you've barked up the wrong tree. But if you want to hear some amazing music and/or stunning guitar work, there's nothing better to try.
