REVIEW: Advent - The Dawn Golden Lake Productions, 2003
6.5/10
Advent - The Dawn - cover art Advent is a band from Italy that formed back in 1998. After two well-received demos ("From A Distant Landscape" and "Valholl") they signed a deal with the Scottish record label Golden Lake Productions in order to release their debut album called "The Dawn". "The Dawn" is basically a black metal album covered with a somewhat progressive coating. Except for black vocals there are also clean vocals which doesn't sound too impressive but they are efficient in creating a contrast to the more brutal side of the band's musical creativity. A lot of riffs have more in common with progressive death metal than black metal, at times similar to what Erik Rutan did with his Alas album, only more aggressively done here. The overall atmosphere also reminds me a lot of Borknagar with both the dark brooding passages and faster, more aggressive ones. I also like the eerie outro which is there to give you sweet cold chills when you put the disc aside. A better production and stronger song writing could have added even more to this album but if these Italians continue to work hard in the future I am eager to hear more from them. Nothing exceptional but a good opening it is. Could be worth checking out for fans of technical death metal and atmospheric black metal.
