Aebsence is a Hungarian band that formed in the end of 1995. As Eastern European recordings often suffer from a low sound quality I was more or less expecting the same this time but I was luckily wrong. Even though the band has not found any financial support in their own country they have recorded this album completely on their own and the result is very professional sounding indeed. Genrewise Aebsence should be labelled as modern rock / metal and this album sounds a little bit like a mix of Seattle grunge, present day Anathema and Tool. The band has already included some native folk music influences but these are unfortunately rare. I think it would have been wise to focus harder on these ideas because that would have made me more interested in the band. However, if they want a commercial and international breakthrough outside the Hungarian borders then they have probably chosen the right path as sticking out has never been a good way of reaching the mainstream crowds. Something that does distinguish Aebsence from other bands in their genre is the alternation between English and Hungarian lyrics. Not exactly my cup of tea but definitely very well done and recommended for fans of modern rock / metal.
