Sound and fury, really. Here be another entry in the crowded brutal deathcore market, Indiana’s Aegaeon catching us unawares with the black metal moniker and logo and hitting with five quasi-anthems. They’re catchy, of a fashion, and there are any number of curious hooks that leap out from the fray. The vocals are committed to the low end, a bit monotonous to be sure, but thankfully sidestepping both ultra-low bowel-churning and utterly silly pig squeals. And here be the complaints: song brevity at the expense of proper development and a drum clinic emphatic of blasts, most likely triggered to the ends of the Earth, entirely devoid of nuance or variation. There is more than one way to achieve brutality, fellas. Case in point: the slowed-down breathing room of “Perception,” which, if not exactly sounding old-school, at least approaches middle school. It’s got some atmosphere, as do many of the creepy riffs and odd note selections. I just wish these young’uns weren’t so adherent to modern day genre tropes. Throw in some solos or something, y’know? A couple of more bells and whistles like that snappy bass treatment will do just nicely.
