REVIEW: Aenigma - XIMMV self-released, 2005
6/10
Aenigma - XIMMV - cover art What to say about this one, other than it’s a bit surprising that the parties involved haven’t seen fit to come up with a follow-up in the interim four years? Maybe it’s hard to coordinate the downtime for seven people all at once. In any case, what we have here are three surprisingly well-produced examples of a more folk-infused, less frantic strain of melodic death metal. It’s not fresh by any means if you were listening to Amorphis and Night in Gales circa 1996, but nowadays it’s not too common a leitmotif in the underground. Slow- and mid-paced riffs, sobbing and tremulous, filled with natural drama and pathos, inflected from time to time with just a touch of violin and cello. All fine by me. Two types of extreme male vocals, at times powerful and at others just shoehorned and silly, and wouldn’t ya know it, sweet ladyfingers soprano mewing to satisfy all the goth-dabblers. I’d like to hear some more by these folks before passing finite and far-reaching judgment. Oh, and the lyrics are all in German because the band is, y’know, from Germany.
