REVIEW: Aesma Daeva - The New Athens Ethos Root Of All Evil Records, 2003
8.5/10
Aesma Daeva - The New Athens Ethos - cover art The third album from the American symphonic darkwave / metal band Aesma Daeva might be the one to finally put them on the map of the world's metal scene. The band have attracted some well worth attention lately after the two previous albums and have started playing live more often. While still maintaining the strong classical and progressive influences there are some more straight-forward metal riffing here and there on "The New Athens Ethos". What struck me also when listening to this album was that the female vocals are generally stronger and more dynamic than before. Her voice is powerful and beautiful as few and beauty is something that runs through this entire recording. The cover art is perhaps not very exciting but the music on the other hand definitely is. Aesma Daeva is not for everyone I am sure because there is so much more than metal present in their music. However, most of you who appreciate the more metal oriented side of the gothic community will probably enjoy them. In my opinion they are one of the very few innovative bands in the genre and I hope that more people will discover them soon. The only thing I have to complain about on this album is that I want them to get heavier. This album feels a little thin at times which is unfortunate but other than that it is a very nice enjoyable release.
