I don't think anyone has failed to realize that gothic metal and the gothic music / lifestyle in general has grown immensely in popularity all over the world lately and especially in the German speaking countries. Aeternitas is one of the German bands that is the result of this wave and despite never having heard of them before I was very interesting in hearing what they are able to contribute with to this vivid and exciting scene. The band is rather young and have only been around since 1999 but their appearance on this album is tight and mature. "La Danse Macabre" is far from an original title but it starts off very nicely with the intro "Der Erste Prediger" where they immediately display their ambitions to combine modern rock music with classical influences. The result is highly impressive at times and the operatic choir vocals remind me of Tristania although Aeternitas are slightly more gothic and less metal than their Norwegian colleagues. Another element that distinguishes Aeternitas is the use of electronics and the male Lacrimosa-like vocals. The lyrics are written in three different languages - Latin, German and English. The songs are all very dramatic and theatrical and despite the fact that several interesting ideas are presented on this second album from the band it feels as if the songs do not lead to any specific place. It is a decent album that will appeal more to fans of gothic music than metal I believe but I hope for more from Aeternitas in the future. They have the vocals, now they just need to figure out what to do with the music because right now most roads lead to nowhere. Fans of Haggard, Tristania and Lacrimosa might be interested in this band though.
