REVIEW: Aeternus - Ascension Of Terror Hammerheart Records, 2001
9/10
Aeternus - Ascension Of Terror - cover art Aeternus have become one of the leading death metal bands on the European scene over the year. Ares is a very ambitious and dedicated man and you can expect high quality every time he is ready to release an album with his Norwegian fellows. After having been in the band for about six years the female bass player Morrigan have now decided to leave and this is the last album where her bass lines can be heard. There are only a few women in extreme metal today and it's always sad to see one of them go but I guess she had some pretty good reasons to quit the band. No matter how wonderful metal may be there are more to life than just that. Back to the music then... Aeternus are one of a few bands who manage to use deep guttural growling (not the most extreme version of it though) and make it sound good. That is not an easy task but Ares is doing it as good as ever. Some people may complain about the band not having progressed since their previous release. This is true to some extent but even if a band don't change their sound completely with each new album they can still be good, can't they? You don't hear many people complaining about Bolt Thrower (if they don't hate death metal of course...). Aeternus are still one of the best death metal bands today, there is no doubt about that.
