REVIEW: After Forever - Decipher Transmission Records, 2001
9/10
After Forever - Decipher - cover art The second album from the Dutch metal band After Forever begins with a beautiful intro track that includes a nice cello solo. Last night I also witnessed part of a musical show from the Royal Albert Hall in London where a Swedish guy sung a great version of a Deep Purple song, backed up by a powerful symphony orchestra and dancers, including a dancing female violinist. The orchestral arrangements on this album doesn't quite reach that level of perfection but After Forever have come a long way at this early stage in their career. This album is not as catchy as the debut "Prison Of Desire" from last year but the songs are more complex, mature and fluent. The vocals are also stronger than last time even though there aren't as many memorable melodies (I'm real good at alliteration, I know...). Altogether this release is stronger and more even than their first album which was still one of the best debut albums ever made. A lot of people will probably call them Within Temptation rip-offs but I will not because they are too good to be treated like that. After Forever have quickly become one of the leading metal bands in the world in my book and there are no limits to what they can achieve in the future.
