REVIEW: After Forever - Prison Of Desire Transmission Records, 2000
8.5/10
After Forever - Prison Of Desire - cover art After Forever is a rather new Dutch metal band that continues the tradition started with bands like Lacuna Coil and The Gathering, although with a somewhat heavier sound that also can be found in the Norwegian scene with bands like Trail Of Tears and Tristania. Everything you would expect from such bands is to be found on the debut cd from After Forever as well - beautiful choirs, the crystal clear female voice of the classically trained Floor Jansen, male growling vocals and lots of keyboard melodies enhancing the guitar riffs. The male growling is not as great as it is with Tristania but it is still satisfying. What is most impressive with this band is instead the exquisite vocal lines for Floor although they could also be refined further. Just listen to the first three tracks on this album and you will realize immediately that After Forever belong to the elite of the Dutch metal scene. There are not that many bands in this genre who manage to create music as beautiful as the vocals like Tristania and Theatre Of Tragedy did. After Forever is a step behind as it comes to the music but the vocals are simply amazing! I just think they could have used the choir a little bit more.
