This band from Oregon (USA) is coming back with their second
full length album. A trio made of J. William W on bass, Anderson on classical
& electric guitar and piano, Haughm handling acoustic & electric guitar,
ebow, percussions, woodchimes and vocals. Some guests musicians add extra
touches of synths, mandolin, contrabass, accordion and trombone. Agalloch is
creating a dark and doom atmosphere (depressive metal) showing some influence
from the famous group Pink Floyd. This is mostly due to a very present
acoustic guitar on almost every songs and a pretty sombre type of mood
throughout the opus. The vocals go from clean to spoken death which are
actually more like whispers. The heavy partitions are somewhat more subdue
thus enhancing the "depress feeling" conveyed by the band. "A Celebration
For The Death Of Man..." sets the pace with excellent acoustic guitars parts,
pounding percussions and spacy keyboards. A short instrumental preparing "In
The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion", a long lasting doom pleasure of 14:45
running time. Outstanding composition to look for. Here again, the acoustic
guitar sounds really good and is omnipresent. But the electric is interesting
too with some psychedelic reverbs effects. A couple of faster and heavier
numbers can be found on "I Am The Wooden Doors" and "You Were But A Ghost
In My Arms". The first one includes some great classical guitar solo and the
second one has a pretty harsh sounding electric guitar painting the walls on
this over eleven minutes piece. Both have some kind of "My Dying Bride"
style, which is cool to my ears. The last song on the album is called
"Desolation Song" and it is filled with nostalgia being conveyed by spoken
words, accordion and a mandolin solo. If Pink Floyd and My Dying Bride were to
have a sonic child, his name could very well be "Agalloch". Even if it's
still a young child, the potential for becoming a full grown sounds
promising.
