Agathodaimon has been rocking the European metal scene ever since it's first line-up, and even in the present their music is considered first class. After their initial vocalist had to quit the band because of the unfortunate happening at the time of his visit to Romania, the band didn't sit around much waiting for Heaven to fall from the sky, but recorded a very good album and kept building their reputation in the following years. "Carpe Noctem" is a record still from earlier times, when Vlad was still vocalist, most songs are in Romanian and have their titles in this language also. Two of the songs are in latin ("Dies Irae", and "Carpe Noctem") but they do nevertheless fit nicely into the package. All songs are well done and, at the time, they did have a very powerful effect and very much potential. Although there are some guitars that could've easily (even preferably) been changed / adjusted / reinforced, the tracks all do sound very dark, very unique. The sound is quite specific to the band. Asides from the guitars there isn't much that could throw you off. Just a bit more edge on the guitar in some places and this could be really cool fucking music. I'm not saying that it isn't cool the way it is, but it's is lacking a few things. It's not a surprise this band got the attention of powerful media as fast as they did, because it is clear that they knew a few things that others just couldn't grasp. Embodiment of spirit and heart in extreme black metal. Just beautiful. I haven't been following this band in a long time, but after listening to "Carpe Noctem" just now, I realized that there was a very good reason I got to love this band in the first place. Not many artists manage to capture so much emotion in their music as this band has done ever since the beginning. I'm sure they've gotten a lot better at it by now.
