Hungarian progressive metallers Age Of Nemesis started out as Nemesis in the mid 90s but now they have changed their name as they have apparently discovered the large number of other Nemesis' who have been around throughout the years. They have released several albums in the past but "Psychogeist" is the first time I am exposed to their musical escapades. It is a semi-conceptual album that begins with six songs that revolve around some kind of psychological drama that I have not delved deeper into. These chain of tracks are linked together rather nicely which show the band's song writing skills. Unfortunately for Age Of Nemesis they do however try to fuse two worlds together - the softer side of progressive rock and the sharper, heavier progressive metal of modern days. When Yes and Symphony X clash head first into each other there must be a smooth border inbetween. This is where Age Of Nemesis tend to fail slightly. They are definitely talented musicians but they are better at writing the calmer sections than they are at metal which makes the heavier elements sound rather generic.
Frontman Zoltán Kiss is doing a decent job and once in a while it sounds as if he has adopted a few techniques from Russell Allen himself although he has his own personal style of singing. The production is satisfactory but not more as it strikes me as slightly thin when they hit the heavier sections. I really want to love Age Of Nemesis because I see huge talent within the band but it is hard to overlook the aforementioned flaws. After all, when recording music it is the final product that matters and not the individual skills of the band members. If you're into progressive rock and metal along the lines of Yes, Kansas, Dream Theater and Symphony X this might however be worth checking out at least.
