REVIEW: Aghora - Aghora Code666, 2000
6.5/10
Aghora - Aghora - cover art The American band Aghora came to life in the years 1995-97 and was founded by Santiago Dobles, the main composer of the band, when he was attending the Berklee School of Music. After having recorded two demos they began working on their debut album which was self-released in 1999. Among the band members we also find Sean Malone and Sean Reinert who both played for Cynic and Gordian Knot. The music on this album is very technical progressive metal, kind of like a Dream Theater light, with strong influences from jazz. Aghora is fronted by Santiago´s sister Danishta Rivero, a classically trained soprano who has a beautiful voice of course. Most of the time her vocals are pretty nice to say the least but in a few places they get a little annoying and don´t seem to fit the music very well. Lyrically this is quite an unusual metal album. Most of them are dealing with spiritual search and are influenced by mystical Eastern spirituality as well as Christianity. Both Santiago and Danishta are believers in the Christian God. This fact makes you wonder a little why they chose to release their album through a label called Code666 in Europe, doesn´t it? Aghora is a well produced debut album definitely worth checking out it you are into experimentive progressive metal but I find the jazzy sound a bit difficult to like. The album was recorded at six different studios in the US and was produced by the band, Gustavo Dobles and Dan Eucariza.
