REVIEW: Agnostic Front - Live At CBGB Nuclear Blast, 2006
7/10
Agnostic Front - Live At CBGB - cover art Agnostic Front are the living legends and perhaps originators of NYHC -- that's New York Hardcore, boys and girls. There's a reason that Hatebreed and other modern Hardcore bands exist and AF necessarily have a lot to do with that. Live at CBGB is a live documentation of all that is Agnostic Front. Roger Miret says of the DVD/CD release, "We had been a band for 25 years and done a lot of things, but we had never done an official DVD. ... Agnostic Front has always been a live band so capturing that truth and the essence of the group was extremely important to us. ... I feel that this is one of our most exciting releases ... [and] a true representation of Agnostic Front." So it goes. Live at CBGB works as both a testament to the band and to the titular legendary venue where NYHC began, that is, alas, no more.

The CD features all the live songs from the DVD along with a pair of bonus tracks as indicated below. Appearing on the DVD is the live set of 19 songs filmed from 5 angles, as well as a 23 minute documentary on the band, an interview with founding guitarist Vinnie Stigma, a photo gallery, and 5.1 Surround Sound. The music is often simplistic and Miret's voice is unmistakable but this simplicity has worked for many years. What grows somewhat wearisome is Miret's constant banter before, after, and between songs. "Let's go N'Yawk!" and "Move it!" seem to appear 1000 times each, but such is NYHC. All in all this is a solid release that offers few surprises to long time fans of the band. However, to the casual or potential fan Live at CBGB is a nice overview of Agnostic Front's long and storied career. "Let's go N'Yawk! You know what time it is out there." Unless you don't, of course.
