This Czech band’s moniker is quite appropriate, given the many line-up changes they have experienced since forming in 1993. However, all of the inner turmoil Agony has experienced has not kept them from creating quality music.
Although short in length, My Turn to Die is nothing less than satisfying. Each song is pleasingly heavy, with the expected European flair and lots of energy. The pounding drums and heavy metal guitars are accompanied by keyboards that lend the music beauty, atmosphere, and at times, gothic horror. This formula of aggression mixed with melody ensures that no song ever becomes boring or tiresome.
This record only has one minor flaw: the vocals. The harsh death metal grunts are of very good quality, but at times, they seem a bit too hostile for the music. The female vocals are very well performed too, but they are rather predictable and ordinary. If there was more power behind them, and if they showed up on the record more, the female vocals could be a key element of Agony’s music.
All in all, however, My Turn to Die is a superb album. It will be a great addition to your CD collection if you like music with emotion, theatre, and a bit of horror. For such a talented band, perhaps the name Agony isn’t so fitting, after all.
