REVIEW: Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse Relapse, 2009
9/10
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse - cover art Agoraphobic Nosebleed has been one of those bands that with every new album have taught me to expect the unexpected and Agorapocalypse is no exception. Although within the last few years Mr. Scott Hull and Co. have displayed an intention of incorporating more varied musical elements to their original grind formula I wasn’t expecting to find so many thrash and even speed and hardcore influences in it.

"Agorapocalypse Now" is the opening dose of dementia which during the first 12 seconds makes me feel like I am waiting for Slayer’s Hell Awaits to start and then it just switches to an onslaught of thrashing grind - if there is such a thing. If I could describe the feel that I get from Agoraphobic Nosebleed along the first half of the album I would use the metaphor of a musical cocktail in which you could pour equal parts of D.R.I., Municipal Waste, Anal Cunt and From Enslavement to Obliteration-era Napalm Death to their characteristic sound topped with some Slayer like guitars here and there and voila. A very interesting aspect of the whole recording and atmosphere of the songs is the tension created with the three vocals which manage to add even more dementia to this very enjoyable cocktail.

As the album progresses into the second half with "Question of Integrity," it tends to slow down the pace a notch, turns moodier and more experimental to an extent and then picks up the pace again with "Druggernaut Jug Fuck," and close with "Ex-Cop" and "Flamingo Snuff" leaving you just thirsty for more Agorapocalypse and play the album again.

Overall you can hear a band that is not afraid of pushing the boundaries of heaviness and musical proficiency and translate it into pure madness to take your senses in a rollercoaster of musical insanity and although I don’t have access to the lyrics, based on the song’s titles and some of the words I get to understand, I can tell they keep their moments of offensive humor and appropriate verbal assault needed to fit with the music.

I am sure fans of the band and those looking for irreverent yet proficient heavy music won’t be disappointed at all.
