REVIEW: Ajattara - Itse Spikefarm Records, 2001
5.5/10
Ajattara - Itse - cover art Itse! The debut album of Ajattara, a Finnish band founded in 1996 and signed to Spikefarm in 2000. But what is Ajattara? You could call it a side project of Amorphis' vocalist Pasi Koskinen who takes the name Ruoja here. To put Ajattara in any genre would be a quite difficult task. Their music has a doomy atmosphere, but it is way too slow to call it black metal or even melodic black metal. Furthermore all songs are sung in Finnish and in a way which is as hard to describe as the music itself, however you can find black metal-ish influences here. In a way it is hard to get an impression of the whole album. There are no good songs and no bad songs. Perhaps that's why most songs get lost between the others and none of them really hits you. So you can find slow, keyboard orientated songs that show a slight melodic touch, but they sound all too similar. Add some strong guitar riffs there and you have an idea what their sound is like. Nevertheless it makes nice background music due to the fact that it's slow and the songs aren't too catchy. For a debut album it is still a nice try. I have no doubt that this album can be topped.
